    Hey guys,

First off: Call me a moocher! I have asked for advice and never given any back so I must say thanks for the help, you all rock! :).

Anyway, I have some files that I like to keep private. I keep these files on my only thumb drive encrypted using TruCrypt and some hard core encryption algorithms. Problem is, I been needing my thumb drive for others needs and eventually end up putting all the files on my hard drive and removing the encryption on my thumb disk and later when finished, re-encrrypting the thumb drive and putting my files back on it followed by using a shredder to remove the files on my hard drive.

Question is: Does anyone know of some good folder encryption software that is free, preferable open source, and easy to use along with no spyware or crap? TruCrypt only encrypts volumes it would appear so it odes not work in this scenario.

    Thanks.
    Christopher.

I use Mpcrypt and have done for ages with no probs. It will encrypt a whole folder or an individual file - not free - think it cost me 5 bucks.

Just a query. That program is defined as " EMail-Security using GnuPG for Windows ".
    Is it for email only?
Or does it work also for other stuff, as well? Bazza

Sorry. gunpg does everything IF you know the command lines. WinPT is a gui frontend to gnupg.

If the files are on ntfs, just right-click the folder > security > remove everyone else except you, ok.

Or use XP's Encrypting File System

If you want to encrypt/decrypt folders/disks on the fly, use PGPdisk, included in PGP 8.0

PGP is no longer free, I think. There are some links at google that still let you download from their servers.

If you must stick with open-source, take a look:
    http://www.gnupg.org/(en)/related_software/frontends.html#win

Gpg4win is all-in-one so you don't have to look for a missing file/package.

MannaPC said that they already use Trucrypt.

I don't think it's nececary to be doing all that copying and decrypting. Here's an idea.

First format your thumb drive with FAT32 or whatever filesystem takes your fancy.

With TruCrypt, make a encrypted partition on a file. Save that to your thumb drive, make as big as you want. If you need the extra space, copy that encrypted file over to the HDD. No need to decrypt anything.

When you're done, copy the encrypted file back, and if you want shred the copy on the HDD.

Of course you can go down the route of PGP style public/private key exchange, but to be fair it's a bit OTT when you're just encrypting some data for private use.

I have used Security Toolkit before, and it is a nifty program. You create virtual drives of whatever size you need, which are password protected. When the "drive" is opened, it looks and acts like just a physical hard drive attached to your computer. When closed, it becomes just a file folder with a pad-lock icon, as I recall. The program also had other features, I believe. Check it out:

It was put out by a company called Quantum Digital Security, an Australian based company. It seemed to work well. It is free for private, non profit use. There was also a version they sell which seemed to be geared toward Govt. and Military use.
I've just discovered their website seems to be down, and the download link to their site does not work. But you can still download it here at MG.
