Primary is a P4 2.8 HT Toshiba Laptop (really a desktop replacement) 512 MB RAM. Secondary is a Athlon XP 2500 OC to 2800 with 1 GB RAM, and third is an Athlon XP 2100 with 512 MB RAM. Laptop running most of the time, and th other two on occasion. I might be able to lasso another couple machines yet. Have too see.

It's a good cause, and I'm happy to be part of the Major Geeks team, as I've been using this site for many moons for SW updates and news of the wierd (I mean "Way off base")

NO HARM,,,on boot enter bios,,,on advanced tab,,disable HT then exit and save,,,Glenn,,,you can always turn it back on,,,,GK

Just make sure you have proper cooling,,,PS systems are designed to run 100 percent,,,have safeguards,,,as long as no overclocking!!!

If you've got bad airflow, then 100% probably isnt good. If its a manufactured PC like HP or somthing then they will have worked out the airflow so that it can run at 100% for an indefinate ammount of time.

Personally I've always had airflow problems but I dont have the money to solve it (all the cable arranging in the world can't help this case!) so I run it at 95% instead

Agreed,,,a self built system is more probable to heat failure,,but a name brand,,wiill accomodate the heat,,,My gateway laptop,,has 2 LARGE fans,,,that kick in in 2 stage,,,fast and faster LOL...the heat sensors on the MB keep heat at a controled rate,,,PS Goldie,,how much heat differance on the 5% less ??? LOL just curious,,Glenn

PS take the case apart,,and buy a small desktop fan to blow directly in the BOX LOL..... :p :p :p

    Re: Folding@Geeks NEEDS YOU!!

I would not disable hyper threading. As is typical with all the clients I have seen for years in this area, they *seem* poorly written and prone to memory leaks. They should take advantage of hyper threading, not the other way around, IMHO. :) I could be missing something though...?

    Re: Folding@Geeks NEEDS YOU!!

HT should allow you to run the client twice. Make sure they are in seperate folders though.

As for temps difference, it backs off about 4C which is good enough to stop me hitting 80C

    Re: Folding@Geeks NEEDS YOU!!

MA ,,Hyper Threading means that one processor has 2 logical brains,,,,HT enabled I can run any one High Priority core program at 50% of processor,,,so my folding even set to max processor can only use 50 % of processor ,,,1.4mhz of system,,,HT disabled I can run 100% of processor 2.8mhz on one HIGH PRIORITY Program,,,

THIS is off the intel page,,,what they dont tell you is that by splitting the processor it only limits the processor to 50 % per program,,,,now don't get me wrong its WONDERFULL to multitask,,,,BUT YOU NEED 100% of processor for a STRONG program like folding,,,or anyother that needs the full core of your system values !!!!! YOU MUST OPEN UP THE HT folding a unit use to take me twice al long,,,untill I realized I had the ability to disable HT !! Glenn

Systems that have the Intel® Pentium® 4 processor with HT Technology1 break new ground by combining world-class frequency with Hyper-Threading Technology to provide an extraordinary computing experience.

    Multitask Like Never Before

Hyper-Threading Technology helps your PC work more efficiently by maximizing processor resources and enabling a single processor to run two separate threads of software simultaneously. The result is greater performance and system responsiveness when running multiple applications at once.

Power to Do More Tasks on Your PC At Once2

Play a game while encoding digital music or editing digital video.

Manage more filters, transitions, special effects, and media types at once when editing home movies. Turn your PC into a recording studio by simultaneously recording, mixing and copying original instrumental analog input, which can be saved in CD, DVD or MP3 audio formats.

PCs based on the Pentium 4 Processor with HT Technology have the performance headroom to handle today's most demanding programs and emerging software applications well into the future.

Processor Core Speeds up to 3.60 GHz
Maximum performance for a wide range of emerging Internet, PC and workstation applications

Hyper-Threading Technology1 Improves performance and system responsiveness in today's multitasking environments by enabling the processor to execute multiple instruction threads in parallel

Intel NetBurst® Microarchitecture Designed to deliver highest performance in video, graphics, multimedia and other sophisticated applications 800 MHz System Bus High bandwidth between the processor and the rest of the system improves throughput and performance

Hyper-Pipelined Technology Extended pipeline stages increase overall throughput

Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 144 new instructions accelerate operation across a broad range of demanding applications

    What Is Hyper-Threading Technology?

Faster clock speeds are an important way to deliver more computing power, and Intel has led the way with industry-leading processor frequency. But clock speed is only half the story. The other route to higher performance is to accomplish more work on each clock cycle, and that's where Hyper-Threading Technology

Benefits of Pentium 4 Processor with HT Technology-based Systems

Increased system responsiveness in multitasking environments, allowing users to do more in less time.

Increased performance for both current and future multithreaded applications that take advantage of Hyper-Threading Technology.

Enhanced value to users by increasing headroom to handle peak workloads.

Flexibility to run critical background applications for a more secure, reliable, and manageable computing environment, without interrupting user performance or productivity.

Goldie,,,can't run the program twice,,,tried,,all combos,,client client,,console client,,,all of the above,,,,it was the equivlant of 50/50 of system resources,,,,and sometimes glitched,,,when one unit wanted to send in,,,,the other would crash,,and would loose both LOL,,ONE at a time 100% processor,,,,,Glenn

I think my point was not too clear probably. My thought was that unless your pc is dedicated to this, then you might want that hyperthreading for day to day use. I have owned a hyperthreaded chip since they came out as a 3.0, so I am aware of how it works :) I am running Folding in the background and you would never know its there as I also have on average 6-10 browser windows, chat program, messaging program, web page monitoring tools, email, antivirus and firewall, all before I start playing games or doing additional things. Ill show you as I catch up to you in the rankings ;)

Can anybody tell me the average time for a Tinker on a P4, 2.4GHz, 512MB ram, laptop?

I have set F@H to use 100% of the processor time available to it.

  21. goldfish

    Re: Folding@Geeks NEEDS YOU!!

If you want to run two instances you need to change the machineID in the client.cfg file. But thats only for multi-processor systems, but theoretically HT too.

Average time for an entire tinker depends on the frames it has, and the complexity of the frames. Each from usually takes from 10-30 minutes each.

Looks like I'm going to slow down a bit. My Althon XP 2500 OC to 2800 turns out not to be so stable with folding running all the time. I have had to dial back the OC to a 2600 to make it run stably. :(
