Good luck with your FAH Geeks. You should update your Folding instructions. GPU Folding is currently the best points per day.

    Geeks stat page: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=12072 :cry

I have 3 computers folding at home, and a couple of borgs out and about, and my PPD is around 12k! You have 77 active folders, and are getting 19k a day? :confused Time to check into newer Folding clients and see if your video cards will fold.

If any of you need help setting up the folding program, start a thread in the Folding section http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=24 While I am not an expert, I will gladly help where I can.

Wow, we just have 9 active folders with just one over the 1M mark, and we get 9.5K PPD. There sure is something weird here. Maybe just a summer thing As soon as I can afford it, I'll be getting an nVidia 'CUDA' speced vid card. I wonder how much I can push out on a Q6600 with stock cooling? Anyways, I'll find out next week when it's up and running.:)

Augie, I was getting around 2k PPD on my Q6600. I gave up on CPU folding. The Cuda Nvidia cards are the way to go. An 8800GT will get you around 4k PPD. I hear the Nvidia 9800 cards fold like crazy.:drool

I think I'll stick with CPU folding for now as the Q6600 beats my X2 3800 hands down, I'm getting 100PPD using one core @ %100 ATM . I'll upgrade to the 6.20 GUI client today and see what happens along with adding the console version for the second core as the hot days of summer are almost gone!:cry I hope I can transfer the current WU progress to this new client as I'm only half way through it. I'll post results in the proper forum.;)

The most frustrating thing I find is that just occasionally, completed WU's are getting lost when the results are submitted.

As I only have an older machine, which can take several days to process one unit, depending upon how long the machine is on during the day. I'm not in favour of leaving a machine on 24/7.

Upgrading just for folding is not a consideration either, so plodding along it is for me, hey at least I'm contributing, after all that's what counts most ;)

Next time it happens, post your log. Also check your team # every now and then, mine went poof a couple of times for some unknown reason.

Re: stats, we are all doing what we can, will update the client this week...that might help a bit. We do need more folders to keep up with all the new teams/folders or we will keep losing ground. Yes, we would like to keep MGs on top but can't do it without more help. If all MG members did a few units a month we could gain back the ground we lost... Also, I know some folders are more competitive than others, most here fold because it's a good cause and to help the team secondly.

You have 77 active Folders on your team last time I checked. But you have a low PPD per folder. I understand money constraints and such. I think updating your Folding help site might get folks downloading newer clients that may get you some more points.

Also, the GPU folding is just crazy right now! Trust me, I am a Folding freak. I am kicking some points with a few Nvidia 8800GT cards. You have a lot of members on MajorGeeks with those cards or better. Try to get them up and folding! I have a Q6600 and a E6600 that just feed my GPU cards...

MajorGeeks is my second 'home' on the web. I fold at my first 'home'. Lots of history there. MajorGeeks would be my second choice for folding. I would love to see you up in the top 50 or so. But it takes a lot of individual and team work to do it. The top 100 is cutthroat stuff!

Good luck to you. Now GET TO WORK! :major

I like you! You should download the Cuda drivers for it, not the drivers on the CD with the card. http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html

Then visit the FAH site for the FAH client: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther

Install the Cuda drivers, then head to the FAH link, install, set it up for your name and MajorGeeks team 12072 I think. You should hear a slight 'hum' from the card when it starts working.

If you have any problems, start a thread in the folding section so someone can help you out.

    Hello Cat :wave
When the last lot of WU's got lost I did post my logs and they have managed to find and credit one WU now after it being submitted 10 days ago. I learnt the hard way though, because if your WU log is gone and you have not got the right information to give them then they cannot backtrack it their end.

I'm not really sure how to change to a newer sys tray client and when 'puter is on I average about 100ppd, so I don't see any immediate need to change, my CPU is two years old and my video card is somewhat of a dinosaur compared to the newer available models. I don't want to stress it .. All this change - all the time...I find it stressful:( meh already got grey hair don't need it falling out too :-D

Tks for .02 it helps really :) - paramonks

    Hi Paramonks,

Folding is not meant to be stressful, it's a contribution to science/research to help people. Please continue as you're doing, which is great, MGs doesn't want you to stress your PC. or yourself. It's ok for those that have a spare one or two but if your primary pc, not good.

    Cat,

You are a kindly lady, all better now. :) I get agitated with people suggesting in order to do better they need the latest or best-est thing out. When in fact older machines and vid cards and even single processor models like mine can still do a good job contributing. I want to rid our society of the hideous diseases that rob us all of our loved ones, but I also need to contribute within my limits.

Folding for MG's hasn't given me grey hair, had it for 20 years - sad but true. :-D

Paramonks, sorry if I was unclear. I respect anyone that folds, whether it is on a bunch of high end computers or just on their daily driver. I certainly don't expect people to just go out and buy all new computers to fold better. Fold with what you have.

But, I am pretty sure there are a lot of members on this site that already have a graphics card that will fold, but they are not folding with it. And as for the folding client, the console usually folds faster than the graphical one, on the same computer. Also, some of the newer clients are more productive than the older ones.

I saw this thread, and followed the links like I thought someone totally new to folding would do. If I was new to folding, I would most likely download the graphical client for my cpu, and not see anything about the GPU clients. So potentially, a person could join your team and crank out 300PPD, when, on the same computer, they could be adding 4k ppd to your team.

Well, this is your team, do as you want. Good luck Geeks!

Fred_G is out of here! :-D

    Hello Fred_G

I don’t bite really, :-D I applaud you for trying to rev up the owners of high end computers of the MG’s team, even though you are not on it. You are right I know that the newer clients are touted as more productive, I’ve read the reports from the folding forums. In the long run getting people to fold is the goal whether they have new, best-est, fastest gear or plodders like me who are still getting use to the fact that computers are now much more than glorified word processors nowadays.

Seeing as you’re a Stats man – here are some for you –

Since I joined the team folding 75 more users have also joined, and 54 of them have since stopped – so only 21 of us have continued to contribute since January ’08. A high drop off rate! :cry

MG’s has over 700 people listed on it’s team less than one-seventh of those still fold for MG’s, new members are great with their high end gear. A balance between keeping previous folders folding and encouraging new folders to the team is what MG’s doesn’t seem to be able to accomplish. Why? :confused

You must have a fairly stable set of folders on your team to continue to keep your place at #57. I applaud your team for their efforts. Well Done.:celebrate

I'm just finally getting everything set up with computers and stuff in my new house. And when The Guy bought his dad a PS3 last week, I recruited it to fold for MGS. It will probably not contribute very effectively, but since my in-laws love the idea of being able to help fighting cancer while listening to their music it will at least be there doing its WUs. :)

    Hello Mimsy,

From reading the FAH folding forums it would appear that the PS3 do in fact get quite good results although I believe some of their WU's have a much shorter turn around time i.e. 2 or 3 days.

Maybe Fred_G can help with details on the PS3. I don't know anyone else on MG's that folds with a PS3.

I do. :) Our PS3 churns out large WUs faster than my monster gaming system does.

I might have to put the GPU folding client on my back-up computer, just to restore some order in the world. PCs are supposed to be superior to consoles, dammit! :mad

Jeez I got sucked back in... How many PPD are you getting on that PS3 Mimsy? This program is very helpful for PPD (could not find it on MajorGeeksrolleyes) http://www.fahmon.net/

GPU folding does several WU's per day. You Geeks really need to look and see if what you have will run it. This is your whole team, all 75 active Folders... http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=12072

    This is Fred_G with 3 Nvidia 8800GT's, an ATI 3870 X2, and a freaking Dell 1.49Ghz laptop... http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=135783

I am not bragging, just trying to show you how to get some points. I bet there are 10 or more Geeks here with a Nvidia 8800GT card or better.

How do you get folks to fold, well that is a tough question. Some people just won't do it. On my team, if you Fold for us, you get an icon under your avatar. If you get in the top 10 producers, or if you are a crazy folding fool, you get an additional icon. Not sure how hard that is to do on a forum.

I have 2 main computers and 2 main Borgs, and I am cranking out almost as many points as your whole team! Something is wrong there! My 5 'puters almost beat your 75?:yum

    Get to work Geeks!

And thanks to all of you that Fold and care about it. Stats aside, we are all on the same team in the end.

I will be glad to help on the technical side if I can. It is up to you folks to recruit members.

    See 'ya at the top!

So it looks like Fahmon comes in Windows, Linux, and MacOS versions... how exactly would I install it on the PS3? *goes dreamy-eyed at thoughts of messing with PS3, then gets smacked by The Guy* Okay, maybe not by hacking stuff...

I don't have an average for you right now, though I can tell you it's the one client I have that has been active lately. My router does not like the computer Folding clients, for some reason. The PS3, being in DMZ, can still fold effortlessly. So I'm 96th of 748, with the only PS3 folding, and only a few hours a week.

I'm going to go start it up again now. :)

Install the FahMon on your PC, and you can add your puters on your network if you have file sharing capability.

I saw that, but since the PS3 is outside of all computer security, it doesn't get to share files with the other machines. I'm too paranoid for that. :)

I might set it up for the other computers once I have them up and running though.
