Followed Removal Guide - some errors - Not sure if I'm cured yet

The first symptom was when I tried to burn a cd, and Sony CD Architect told me I had no CD burners (I have 2). I had recently installed/uninstalled/reinstalled Sony CDA a couple times (trying to get some of its features to work right), and figured I'd messed up something in the registry, and ran "TuneUp" utilites, which found and fixed some errors (always does) but didn't cure the problem.

So I decided to do a System Restore, and found ALL MY RESTORE POINTS HAD DISAPPEARED. Then I checked the system logs and found these errors:

DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service BITS with arguments "" in order to run the server:

The TuneUp Theme Extension service depends on the Themes service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    atapi
    PCIIde

The Nero BackItUp Scheduler 4.0 service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the path specified.
(I wasn't aware I had Nero BackItUp Schedular installed - not something I use)

So I tried to run Registry First Aid, which always starts by creating a restore point, but got an error saying something like "unable to create a restore point, please make sure the System Restore service is turned on and that you have administrative rights". So I went to manage/services and turned on System Restore, which promptly turned itself back off.

Then AVG popped up a window saying it had detected and quarantined a virus ("packed.hidden" this happened a few more times over the next 24 hours, including once while running SuperAntiSpyware, which made me nervous about disabling AVG when instructed).

So here I am. I followed your removal guide (Windows XP Cleaning Procedure), none of the tools indicated finding anything, but RootRepeal wouldn't run (actually it starts, then freezes Windows, then eventually crashes in a blue screen).

    Logs attached: Malwarebytes, SAS, ComboFix

(edit): oops, I thought I had finished all steps, but haven't run MGTools. I'll run that and attach the log to a follow-up post, along with any pertinent observations. But I do see now that System Restore is working again, so maybe I'm fixed. Thanks.

Okay, here's my MGLogs.zip attachment, but actually I think the problem is solved. My computer hasn't rebooted this fast in ages! CD Architect still can't find one of my drives, but I suspect that drive may be physically failing (it was having intermittent problems awhile back, which was why I added the 2nd drive).

If, after a few hours of actual use, I realize I'm still infected after all, I'll post back. Otherwise, THANK YOU MAJORGEEKS FOR YOUR REMOVAL GUIDE - YOU SAVED MY BUTT!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You have a little more to do.

Please remove MGtools.exe from your Desktop. It does not belong there.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10\bin\jusched.exe"
    O8 - Extra context menu item: E&xport to Microsoft Excel - res://C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office10\EXCEL.EXE/3000
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10\bin\ssv.dll
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10\bin\ssv.dll
    O23 - Service: LiveShare P2P Server 10 (RoxLiveShare10) - Unknown owner - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2.20

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks. I followed your instructions closely, except: I had already uninstalled all old versions of Java, and reinstalled using the latest version, so I skipped that part of your instructions (I DID uninstall Spybot S&D 1.5.2.20). Likewise the lines you said to check in HJT pertaining to Java were no longer there.

Also, I don't know if this is relevant at all, but it seems a rather strange coincidence. Just after finishing the removal guide and posting my logs and such, Windows Automatic Update recommended some "security updates". Lots of them, maybe 30 or so. I went ahead and installed them.

Anyway, everything seems to be running okay now.

    Thanks again

    You're welcome.
It's possible that the malware you had was blocking you from getting updates.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
