forgotten linux login password!

    i fear i already know the answer to this but a second opinion's always appreciated.

    i have forgotten the password to a linux based server running a helpdesk program. is there anyway to reset the passwords or bypass the login screens?

    i have considered using Cain and Abel but not sure if this is a good plan, any ideas?

    I don't know the first thing about linux but Im pretty sure C & A is windows only
