Formating a Drive

    Hi

    recently i bought a 120 GB HDD MODEL:ST3120026A

    I partitioned and formated the drive and its total capicity is 111 Gb , shouldnt it be really close to 120 GB like 118

    It's the way they convert bytes to kb's,to mb's,to gb's.Your drive can hold 120 million billion bytes which equates to roughly 111.77 gig.

    But they sell the drive as 120 gig and yep,I got caught a while back thinking I had lost this space till I googled around.

    Using the maths of 120 actually is 111.77 as explained in the previous post, multiply "what you are told your hard drive is" by 0.931417 to get "actual" size
    For example 120 by 0.931417 equals 111.77

    I tried to attach a quick and dirty Excel spreadsheet but *.xls is not an approved attachment format for MG. Also tried conversion to *.txt but that came out screwed up.

    I haven't checked the original maths but multiplying by 0.931447 should give you a rough idea of how much you lose, from what the nice sales person said. Bazza
