Forum Changes

As many of you may have noticed, there's been some additions and deletions of some forums to give Major Geeks a cleaner feel and to update it to reflect changes in the tech thats out there.

MA has changed the forums around and is still working on it. He'll be posting an announcement I believe, however I just wanted to put this out there before anyone asked.

As far as deletions, Interesting Websites is no more. It was mostly redundant to the Lounge so anything that would have been in there will now go in the Lounge.

There are some other forums that were removed because no one used them any longer.

All posts remain, FYI. Some forums were only getting posts every so often so will find networking in hardware, programming in software, etc.

Less forums, easier to pick the right forum. Everything works the same.

Are you guys going to remove some of the older program links.

Some of the listed programs you guys got are completely out of date and would most likely break some thing then fix it.

{MG} site really did need a over hull.

Drivers is under software since it's software :)

What an incredibly welcome change! Not that there was necessarily anything wrong with the forums here, but another site I frequent has elephantitis of the forum...they add such narrowly specialized forums that no one posts in them more than twice a year, and there are something like 85 of them. I love streamlined forums for trying to find stuff!

Glad you like it. I think people just have to get used to this if they miss their forum:

Is it software or is it hardware.

    Done :)

But I agree, it looks better than I had expected.

To take this back to the original topic of the thread, this is your site and your forum. You are allowed to make whatever changes you want to make, and as non-paying members we are allowed to go with said changes or to leave. I for one appreciate the opportunity to stick around... I know I have been less than active lately, but that doesn't mean I don't check in just to read now and then. I still consider myself a part of MGs, and support whatever you need to do to keep the site a success.

That said, please add birthdays back. They are fun, and if you really want a feeling of community here, you need them :)

one minor thing: "desktop" should be plural. right now it's jarring to see "desktop and laptops". so much so that it sounds like desktop indicates the software meaning there.

Good move in my opinion. I hate too many subforums.

  32. mjnc

    mjnc MajorGeek

Seems like this is about the third paring down of sub-forums in the last two or three years or so.

My experience is that sometimes it takes several attempts before you get something the way you want it and you're satisfied
with the result. Maybe this time they hit the mark. :cool

I hope people won't be discouraged from posting Programming questions since that forum is gone.
There are several members that watch that forum and are very knowledgeable. They always respond to appropriate questions and
are always helpful. Their knowledge and ability is very impressive, IMHO. It would be a shame to lose that.

I was wondering if MA and CP would consider adding some typical keywords to be used as tags in the threads to be used with forum search.
They could be made available with a drop down list with check boxes for selection. Users could still type in other tags.

I don't know if there is already something like this, but I'd like to see MA do a video tutorial about how to use the forum
    search tool effectively.

    (I hope this isn't too l-o-n-g) :-o

+1 for Mimsy to keep her title. ;)

mjnc's comments triggered this thought: what happens with those folks who seemed to appear out of nowhere when someone asked a Q in an under used forum. I'd assumed they'd subscribed to that particular forum, so what happens to those subscribers, some of whom seemed very useful Members, now that those forums and, presumably, their subscriptions have gone?

  34. Goldenskull

Goldenskull I can't follow the rules

I agree some are specific Questions like Programming and it was good to have them forums.Be cause it would not get lost in the software forums.

I think there should be one more forum section added for stuff like Games and programming All mixed into one.

I don't recall EVER paring down the forums in 14 years. Some changes, yes, but not paring down.

I have answered your question in this thread:

In short, programming was easily the least posted in forum so you can simply use the forums.

Lot has changed in the last 14 years and going forward we need to make some changes.

I should say I am pleased that the changes have been well received by an overwhelming majority.

    Video isn't a bad idea.

Personally i have found that the site has evolved with new technology coming in and replacing some of the dinosaur apps.
The malware team are unbeatable (i remember Emma (Kestral) joining and being a total beginner but she has learned and developed into a top rate malware fighter)
Although i am not as active as i used to be (due to ill health) i am an avid MGs reader and when the PC comes to life in the morning it opens with MGs and it stays open all day with me popping in and out during the day.
MGs is without any doubt one of the best tech sites on the web and the mods do a great job in keeping it free from idiots who just want to disrupt what is a fantastic place of learning (you should get University status)

Great job Tim and Jim plus all the mods (not sure if it is Laura's team or Davids?)

do my eyes deceive me or have SIGNATURES finally been blocked?!

halleluiah! a bigger waste of screen space i cannot imagine.

plus it's confusing when someone says "here, try this app" only to be hijacked by 5 lines talking about some OTHER app....

Sorry, MA. Sorry you didn't like my wording of "paring down".
Just meant that other individual forums have been removed in the past because of little interest or activity.
I won't get the names right, but I remember something called Hearth and Home and another about cars, trucks, boats,
motorcycles, etc. and of course the Hot Button forum. Can't remember all of them.
The Overclocking forum also seemed very quiet.

I like it. Simple is good. Less confusing and less intimidating.
    It Looks Good.

    Thanks!

Nope. They are still around. ;) If you can't see them (I have one), you might have them turned off in your profile.

We haven't allowed links in signatures for quite a while now, but all others are fine. Btw, if you do see advertising of any kind in a sig, please report the post.

@LauraR: well, i didn't myself turn off anything, but somehow with the forum changes the default must have changed. they're definitely turned off NOW.

hip hip hooray! wish i'd known i had that power 6 months ago!!

i will NEVER understand people's obsession with adding those. if I were to conclude every phone call i made with "by the way, friedrich nietzsche once said...", i would have very few people answering my calls before long.

and not even a RANDOM quote, but the SAME dang ONE!! when a person posts multiple times in a given thread (not uncommon in a good discussion), what makes ANYONE think we want to read the same lame4ss spam MORE THAN ONCE?!

"once" was bad enough, believe me.

You do realize signatures are always the same because the software requires they be the same, yes? As for not knowing you could turn them off...always explore software! It's how you learn. ;)

And signatures cannot contain spam. As Laura said, if you see one that does, report it and it will be taken care of.

  45. Phantom

You obviously don't know the concept of a 'Signature', is then. A Sig. is precisely that, some kind of thing that you want to be a personal trade-mark. You're not supposed to read it and memorize it every time you read a post. That sort of attitude is pathetic, i.m.o., sorry.rolleyes

You ask for a can of Coke, Not "A can of the Real Thing!" That must be read every time you buy a can.rolleyes

Don't like reading sigs.? Then turn then turn them off and don't, instead of complaining to everyone else.

You might wanna read up on it, too:-

  46. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

People use signatures for the same reason we spend a lot of time and effort on selecting an avatar. Because it's an easy and obvious way to express something important about ourselves, and about our personality, that we want people to know about us. Avatars and signatures are the clothing and hairstyles/make-up of online social interaction. In the world outside the internet we pay attention to how we look, because we know we will be judged by our appearance. In a forum like this one, the signature is an integral part of that appearance. It can be turned off, so it's not quite as vital as the avatar, but it's still important.

And to be perfectly honest, if you are at all fluent in the fine art of interacting with other human beings without ever meeting them in person, I don't need to explain this to you, because you already know why forum signatures matter. In fact, I could very easily argue that by being so adamantly against them, you are actually against getting to know the people who post here, and you're sending a strong message that you have no interest in doing so. But that would be kind of bitchy of me, now wouldn't it? ;)

I was trying to think of an analogy, and the best I could come up with is that the Avatar is like a Letterhead and logo or page header and the Signature is like a page footer.

Quite simply put, only your assumption they are gone. Threads were simply moved and subscriptions remain in place. Had I deleted them... then, yeah.
