Found trojans/etc, removed - am I clean? Just checking!

I'm running a Windows XP SP3 MCE laptop which used to run pretty nicely (1.83GHz, 1gb RAM) but lately became pretty slow.

I run MSE, which seems to slow things way down sometimes and irritates me - I'm thinking of going back to AVG or another antivirus.

I let Windows Update do its thing. Java, Flash, and browsers are up to date.

I successfully used this Malware Removal Guide to clean my in-laws' computer, so I thought I'd give it a runthrough. You'll see in the logs what I caught - a few trojans? Spybot S&D also found several cookie trackers. It says everything was successfully removed. Do you think it was? RootRepeal caught "hiberfil.sys" but this is apparently Windows' hibernation file - this is a laptop and we typically hibernate it instead of shutting it down.

I don't use warez, porn, etc -- although I did look up some torrents recently to look for some old out of print albums. Do you think that's where this came from?

I read that MSE can also slow things down by scanning its own libraries, so you should exclude its directory from its scanner. Is this true?

    Thanks,
    Chris

The log from Combofix is totally axed, all I have is the header. Can you see if this file exists C:\combofix.txt and attach it for me please?

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\PKP_DLdu.DAT <--- You know what this file is for? If not then please delete it.

    Delete these temp files also.

    C:\~GLH005d.TMP
    C:\~GLH005b.TMP

Uninstall the below outdated version of java but leave 6.22 alone as it is current.

    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7

hiberfil.sys is fine. It's just a hidden file so that's why RR always picks it out.
AVG is no longer on our list of recommended antivirus.
    Quite possibly, yes.
Something that you will have to delve deeper into, in the software forum.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Give a brief description of how the machine is running.

The computer has been working much faster since the initial run-through. Booting up, logging in and out of users, and software starts are all faster - for which I'm eternally grateful!

C:\Combofix.txt does not exist - however the file exists in two copies, on my desktop and in my Documents folder (?), but both copies only have three lines of text (the header I assume). Shall I run it again? I didn't want to mess anything up.

Successfully removed that .DAT file, the TMP files, and the old Java.

    Thank you!
    Chris

    You're welcome. Safe surfing.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks! I was able to follow these instructions perfectly and everything seems to be running smoothly. I'll be toggling System Restore now and thanks for the link for how to avoid this problem in the future...!
