Free Anti Virus Software....HELP!

Hey everyone, just wanting to know what anti-virus protection would work best with Earthlink/WIN XP and with MS Security System? What I have used before was: Norton (Symantec)...worked way too slow. Now using Earthlink's own Protection Control Center program. Not sure if I like that one either. Updated it once and then had all these different windows pop up asking if I should let them come 'in' or 'out' of my Internet connection. ALSO, note that for the first time I had a blue screen come up and tell me that I had a serious 'ERROR' and it gave instructions on what to do if that wasn't the first time that happened, or it just said to turn off my computer. Nothing was lost that I could tell, but it sure did scare me. What was that? It has happened twice now in like a few days time.

Ok, I am looking for something that any dummy can use that doesn't slow down my already not so fast computer. Also, don't forget to give me advice about what works best with MS Security. I have looked on MajorGeeks and found what was popular....but, need some input before I make another change on my system.
