After this mornings download of AVG updates a window popped up saying AVG FREE will end on January 15 2007. I will be sorry to lose it. Any feedback on the next best AV program?

There is a new version out, AVG 7.1 is the old version. You can get the new 7.5 here (free):

I was a little distressed when I read they're branching out into internet security. I wish successful programs would stay what they are good at. I've had to abandon several softwares because they simply got too bulky. My system folded under the added weight. (Thinking of Norton 2006 and Kaspersky 6)

Wait for norton 2007. It seems to be a complete rebuild of their AV. And it works with vista. Why oh why, are they (norton) complaining about vista, when the damn thing works with vista! Oh, wait, they are complaining about the 64 bit version.
BTW, I beta tested 2007. It doesn't seem as "bloated" as the previous versions. But, that is just my opinion. I still prefer Avast! home edition, since it is free.

Branching out seems to be popular lately among software companies. From their perspective, it's a good thing: make money. A suite can force the user to upgrade their pc when they don't have to. In the end, it benefits the hardware industry. I call it the MS strategy. ;)

Kaspersky tops most av charts. Next is NOD32. You want free. I use this:

    AOL Active Virus Shield

    Powered by Kaspersky Lab

why do you have to do a repair installation for a new version? <feels that thrill of horror>

I just installed the new version under normal installation and had no problem. Thanks for the info on the update.

It's not a repair install in the sense that something is wrong with the program. It shuts down the version you are using (7.1) to install the new components to upgrade (7.5)

You can also use the add/remove components option. It does the same thing.

    No need for Horror :)

I'm just quoting what MG posted on the page for the download. :)

When I installed it this AM, I just went with the defaults and had no problem (yet, anyway). I guess I must have missed MG post for the installation.
