I kind of like the idea of storing my email locally, which this program says it does: it gets your gmail and puts it on your hard drive, deleting it from gmail. But I guess the question is:

Is my hard drive and local backups as secure as Google's servers and their no-doubt world-class backups?

And is the danger of hackers or snoopers getting into my gmail account very great.

I notice that the program has a '5' Majorgeek rating, but only two people have rated it.

    Thanks.

lots of programs can do that. As long as it supports POP3 or IMAP

No where near as secure, unless they are unplugged from the internet physically.
That depends on whether you use password managers, use public wifi, have a secure local network or reuse the same password for your gmail on multiple sites. These are the best ways to lose your passwords. The reality is that if your gmail gets hacked there is a %99.99999999 chance it was something you did, not gmail's fault.
