It lets you select a different country other than the US.

I "ordered" some. Time will tell if they deliver to Aus or not.

    Come on 6-8 weeks!

I'm curious to see if they deliver outside the US.

    Hiya Your Goldiness! :)

I hope so, but it's confusing.

It says it's only for the US, but you can select any country you want and the request goes through?

Whomever gets theirs, please post back.

I have a feeling it is going to be an unformattable thumb drive with MS info on it. Probably useless, but I did it anyways.

You can select just about any country.

Whether they will deliver is another matter. Let's hope so.

Why are you all so excited about a USB drive that contains Microsoft information? It cannot be used for storage!!!

Please correct me if I am wrong. But typing WWW.MICROSOFT.COM will get you the same thing without a physical device. It's like waiting for snail mail, to recieve an email... Ironic?

How do you know it can't be wiped and used for storage?

On another post in the lounge, it was said you could.

I too, would like to know how you know?

    I'm wagering you don't.

I am basing it off of some seminars that I have been to. NCR and Techdata have handed these out to some of the companies I have worked for. They are about 25MB and unformattable. I was excited the first time I saw one, but a lot of companies are using them as marketing tools now. Kind of like, "your free CD" when floppies dominated the PC market.

Okay. Not trying to burst your bubble, but the USB drive does not contain a file size and says "information." When have you gotten something for absolutely free that you could actually use? I will stop posting about this, but I am 99% sure I am correct.

  20. Adrynalyne

You aren't bursting my bubble, you see, I worked for them, and I'm one of those people who actually believe in waiting before assuming. I've seen them give away a lot of stuff. MS has more money than both of the companies you mentioned combined twice over.

Its free. No skin off my back if its not useable.

If it's not formattable out of the box (envelope?), it will be once i'm done with the thing!

Even if it's not formattable at all (with write once memory) then I can bet it'll be an interesting thing to play with.

finally a response worth answering to (no offense). If you can figure out how to format a USB drive with built in firmware, let me know. I have two right now and Windows doesnt have the ability to edit them in anyway. I am sure it can be done. Back to the point, how big are these drives going to be? My guess is 64MB. They should include a free T-Shirt.

  24. mcadam

    mcadam Major Amnesia

Oh it's formattable alright, whether you do it legally or not is another issue :p

No offense taken, I was only replying to you for humor.

    :)

I found a site saying they are 16mb. I figure they are probably assuming the size.

No of us are going to lose sleep if it's not able to be formatted.

I asked how you knew because I can't stand people posting things as fact on a hunch or a somewhat similar experience.

If it's not usable, it's going to be fun playing around with it.

I've (we) lost nothing by ordering one, and as Adrynalyne stated, Micro$$oft have more money than they know what to do with.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was a "retail" key or if it wasn't.

Only time will tell, so whoever gets theirs first, post back please.

What do you mean, "legally"? There's nothing illegal about modifying USB Devices? Nor about formatting them.

If it's not able to be formatted, my 1200 Watt microwave should take care of it.

I've stuck CD's in there, and the light show is great.

Wonder what happens to flash memory? :)

  29. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

Its all guessing games,if you cant format it may be recognized by windows as a usb device and not a drive,it may be like tryna store stuff on your printers memory which no doubt someone has tried :)

If you can format it, imagine the irony of carrying around Linux on a Micro$$oft branded free USB key! :)

  31. mcadam

There's ways around it, such as not Creative stopping you from formatting their early mp3 players (believe you me I used to have one)

If it's illegal to change data on a device that belongs to you then by reading this you are breaking the law!!!

If they bothered to find some stupid loophole in UK law (and every other country they're shipping to) that says you cannot format it, then they have more time than I thought.

It'd be ironic to have Linux on there, but wouldn't it be more ironic to have something that allows you to forget about Windows Licencing? Not that I'd encourage that kind of thing, of course, but it'd be very ironic :p

That`s the deal. I am hoping it can be wiped and used again. If not, just another Mr. Softie piece of junk.

Mine was 128 megs, although I've read some folks got 64...guess what: if one is running an illegal copy of Windows, it warns you that it phones home. MS uses greed to aid in the fight against piracy :D

Also, high speed users are advised to disconnect router hub cables before
plugging it in as your data will be subjected to probing...my little screamer box brought that to my attention. ;)

I might be mistaken, but they look like rebranded IBM drives.

wow, 128mb, I could really use that, I signed up about a month ago when i saw it on digg, haven't got it yet. and the drm doesn't bother me, I have a legal copy of XP.

but good stuff on it being reusable :)
