    Hi mr wolf,
i've been using avg anti virus grisoft since my norton ran out of subscription a year or so ago it has caught every beasty my pc has had the misfortune to come in contact with. And updates are every couple of days so try it i think you'll be impressed it will check you incoming and out going mail and certifie it on the every mail you send so do it today and keep those beastys away or at least in your new virus vault.

    Hi max
That is a good question. They are both top quality programs which are updated regularly. In my opinion they are both equal and will serve you well :)

Do you know if AntiVir puts anything in the startup things, IE takes up any MBs at boot?

    Hi max
Like most anti virus program's they take up between 5/8000K in memory processing. Which you would not even notice in reality ;)

Yea, but I don't want it taking ANY unless I start the program. Can I do this somehow?

    Hi max
Anti virus should always be running to be affective. The vast majority of viruses come from web sites and if your anti virus is not running you will be none the wiser. So if i were you i would get into the habit of leaving it on at all times. As i have previously stated in a correctly configured computer you would not notice in any decrease in performance

    Hi max
It is still bad practise to switch it off. "Games" or no games. You have to remember that it is constantly monitoring all incoming e-mails and your system from start up till shutdown and any turning off can cause a malfunction which you would be none the wiser until you run your next scan. And in some cases it would not always show up in the logs. But your system will be running oddly and slowly and eventually stopping. So i would say again to you that you best leave it on and maybe add some more ram to your system to compensate for your games :)

    Hi Max,
Although I don't recommend it, yes you can turn off the resident scanner, but like I said, I don't recommend it.

Then I recommend ending the process.

That way its not running during games, yet when you reboot it comes back.

Then you dont have to worry about forgetting.

I support what the guys are saying here too.

Even if you leave it running, 6mb of ram is not gonna make 1fps of difference ;)

    Hi everyone

The fact that most of virus come from email and "mailicious" websites doesn't invalidate the fact that most antivirus cause a non negligible overhead to the system (non negligible is very relative/subjective, I know). I don't receive emails with virus because my mail provider offers good antivirus (and also I don't open "strange" mails). I don't use IE (I use firefox and I'm careful with what I permit) so virus from those kind of sites don't affect me much. But sometimes, I need a AV just to scan some downloaded file or a friends disk, etc. And I would like to have some AV that offers the option to not install services and/or background processes. Does any of the AVs mentioned in the thread work like this?

Thank you and sorry for my bad english.

    cya

    Max:
I run all of the following free malware. None of them are running in background. I run them manually when they have upgrades or database updates available or when I've downloaded files I don't completely trust (scanniing the file or its folder only).
