Hey friends. Can anyone here please recommend a program that disguises one's IP address?

According to the test some tech magazines conducted on those so called internet surf disguiser type programs they do not even do a good job, they also use up lots of bandwidth causing the surfing to slow down noticeably. Considering these programs are also NOT free, I doubt it would be worth investing even time but I'd like to read an individual's experience too. ;)

No worries even my mom started calling me 'Pepito' because of Kodo, I am doomed now.

Anyhow, back to your question, most site's including MG, post what the vendor provide's them as the so called 'review' of a certain application instead of a true testing and review of the app. Kind of like how Intel blew the Hyper-Threading technology out of proportion by claiming it increased the performance of the system and programs by XX much more where in real life test, there were no significant increases at least on most commonly used programs, that goes to show you that vendor and software makers will go the extra mile with their BS to sell their product, though one of the editor's of PC World magazine totally downed the Anonymizer 2004 in a recent review, the editor stated that the program significantly slowed down not only the high-end system but also used too much bandwidth. Additionally, according to some cross examination he found out that his identitiy was not even truly masked on the Internet as the program claimed. I also tried it and noticed a noticeable bandwidth drop, also I was not impressed at all. Also knowing that the utility didn't even 100% hide you make you think 'why bother?'.

I couldn't say much for the other two. But given the fact that they all use the same concept, I doubt the results would be much different.

Bottomline, what activity do you do that needs that much privacy? Is it worth the negative factors that comes in the play by requiring additional so called 'masking'? If you are at work and trying to accomplish this, goes without saying you shouldn't need to do this at a work place and also it could easily go against companies policy and get you in serious trouble.
If they couldn't track you and u know they were monitoring you, then wouldn't they suspect something? ;)

Well that succinctly answers my question as to your opinion of the review in PC Mag Pepito.;) (I like Pepito)..................

Personally I have no wish to hide my IP address, or get any such program. After reading your
post like 'why bother'. Was just interested in your opinion. As for my activities on the net 'I'm pure as the driven snow'. ;) Have also noticed conflicting reviews from the same source................:D

You can use proxyweb.net but it IS very slow and doesn't seem to show images along with their header which takes 2 inches of screen space.

Uhh, too much bandwidth? How does that work?

It might be slower because it has to "bounce" off another server twice (meaning the distance the data has to travel is further) but that doesn't "inflate" the data at all...??

The bandwidth usage not only relies on the size of packets but also the number of data transmissions in and out, I am not sure but my understanding was the program itself didn't utilize the bandwidth or simply had bugs in it. But even if it just used up plenty of system resources that alone would slow down (or make it seem so) your browsing speed, kind of like having T1 connection but the Internet browser you have is buggy and it has memory leaks, etc. thus causing a slow-down on the entire system.

The bottomline is currently there is no such program that does a decent job, free or not. If anyone knows, please let me know. I am willing to test it...

I got banned from a message board for a lame reason. The message board logs IP addresses. I want to register and tell some of the members how to keep in touch with me but it recognizes my IP address and denies registration.
    VERY FRUSTRATING!

Also, I simply like the idea of privacy. I guess I have a little 'Civil Libertarian' in me.
I would assume most people that want their IP hidden are stealing music or movies but that is not the case here.

Primedius WebTunnel claims to hide IP addresses but it's not free and has a lot of bells and whistles I don't need.
All-in-One Secretmaker seems to infer that it hides your IP but I am not sure of that one either.

Thanks for all of your replies!

There surley can't be much room for error, all you're doing is redirecting the packets sent out to a different location, changing the Destination part of the packet. All the rest stays the same.

But yeah, if the program doing this is buggy.... I suppose....

Anyone have any thoughts on the above situation and/or programs?

PS - Turned out, I wasn't banned from the message board. For some reason their server now requires access to member's computers?!?! Weird huh? A moderator said I must have denied access with the NT Server. Why would a message board need their server to access my computer? I still can't get logged on even after shutting down my firewall.

PS - In case your curious, the board is libertynewsforum.com
