    HI guys

Many of the software downloads you have listed as "freeware" turn out to be shareware that you need to pay for if you want it to work. What's with that? WHY suck in the hapless user to thinking they are getting freeware when it's just a deception to make us BUY it???:cry

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Great way to introduce yourself :-D

They're all clearly classified, in the individual category lists, the home page and on the individual download pages.

Sorry I didn't introduce myself. I was pissed off when searching Major Geeks for FREEware. Yes it does clearly state when it's Freeware BUT much of it is clearly NOT. There's also quite a few that just don't work at all on Windows 7 when it also clearly states that they DO. I'm not ungrateful. I appreciate all the hard work that goes into producing open source software but it's very disappointing when you find it's not what it seems.

    Thanks for replying

Can you give some examples ?
If you find software that has been advertised as Freeware but definitely does not have a free version then you should report it to MajorGeeks so they can investigate it.

Freeware is not necessarily open source
Many companies produce a Freeware version and a Shareware version of their software, the free version usually has some retrictions, less features or 'annoying' windows advertising the benefits of the Shareware version.
For the 'average home user' the free version usually has enough features to satisfy them, while someone who uses the software intensively and needs the extra features will gladly pay for the Shareware version.

I don't know why some software would not work on your Win7, was it very old and had not been updated recently ?
Again, some examples would be good

Please give a few examples. I have been hanging around here since September 2007 and I have not found things marked as free that were shareware or trialware. I have on occasion found the description under Windows requirements to not be correct. I usually visit the author's page top left link before I download something unknown to gain additional information.
