freeze

    Dell Dimension 4600 xxp home sp3
    My pc is password protected which i did under "users" in the control panel.
    When I enter F2 and try to escape or when I enter safe mode and try to esc, when I see the password sign in page, I sometimes can hit 'guest' to continue booting up, but usually the pc freezes.
    I can avoid this by removing the password before F2 or F8 but is this typical.
    Is there a problem I can rectify?
