Freezing and lockups

I've spent a few days with the very helpful malware section and imagine any virus/spyware has been sorted, but I am back to getting some issues still.

Generally upon logon, opening minor applications (word, explorer, IE) can often reduce of crashing, not responding, freezing for a minute or so. The CPU monitor of task manager will go up and down like crazy, often capping. There are no particular processes which seem to zap a lot of use during these periods. The ram usage rarely goes above 50% in normal use.

There can be hours with no problems but often games with crash and IE will freeze with a few tabs open, although sometimes with just one.

Assuming this isn't a virus issue, is there anything else it could be? Failing CPU/mobo? I only recently replaced/copied over to a new WD 750gb HD and it was running fine until a reg issue caused a failure to start window and I had to manually repair the reg files from a slave HD.

    Many thanks for any suggestions.

Hi my friend , are you checking your memory ? You have to download this

    http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

    burn it with

    http://majorgeeks.com/ImgBurn_d4870.html

afterwards you must run memtest for 5 hours at least !! :wave

PC is a homebuild, the specs are:

    Vista 64
    Asus m2n4-sli
    Athlon 64 x2 5200
    GeForce GTX 460
    4gb DDR2
    WD 750gb HD
    Samsung 200gb HD

That program is pretty cool, not showing any odd readings so, max temp on anything is only 43C far but I'll restart and throw some stuff at it shortly, thanks a lot.

Hi thanks, not something I've ever thought to do before, never seemed to have any issues with the RAM, I'll have to find a rare day I go out and leave it running!

Yeh my post didn't show up for ages, neither did a reply to this! I've been busy with various assignments but had problems constantly I just hadn't got around to sorting out again. Now I have more time and noticing it more I'm trying other things to fix.

I still haven't run the memory test selected but a friend told me another one which picked up nothing, I''ll still do the one above this evening.

Thanks for the driver link, I was all up to date.

I got CCleaner and after clearing my temps and fixing registry issues ot dropped my ram by about 10% and there were generally less processor spikes, but internet explorer and games/steam are still causing bad lag and freezing. If I don't run IE after turning on and just use word, excell etc it is usually alright.

I have still never got a temp higher than about 50c

Edit: Also I meant to ask could my antivirus be causing this? Before my computer got a virus and then had a registry crash I only used windows standard tools defender etc and firewalls and was careful online. Since then I've had AVG and avast (installed/running separately) and wonder if this could cause the symptoms, but I don't want to uninstall if not.

Hi my friend , you must run memtest ensuring your ram's health , you should uninstall both of them Avg even Avast , after that you are able to have a clean install ( avira antivirus , for instance )

because there is a possibility some leftovers causing your system to be crashed , this tool helps you uninstalling Avg completely !! :wave
