    Evening Folks

I am looking for a little confirmation of my suspicions if possible please. I have an emachines 410 that goes back a couple of years. 2.4 ghz P4 with 512mb PC2100 DDR Ram.

Has been working fine until recent possible PSU failure . Very bad smell etc. Will not boot now just has continuous power on but no post at all. No beep codes. CPU and PSU fans are spinning but HDD activity. I have changed PSU for working spare without any luck. I have reset CMOS (removed battery for a bit) and I have disconnected all other components singularly and altogether.

Still no boot - no post. Just a couple of spinning fans when plugged in. Would I be safe to say the motherboard has died.

Thanking you all in advance for your help. - Wilko

If its a psu failure man, emachines should take it back. It's there problem, but if the power supply is working then its probaly the motherboard or if theres no HD activity could be harddrive,Bottom line...Get emachines to RMA.

There should be a Light on the motherboard to tell you if its on or off.

    ......is the light on?

Emachines had a bunch of psu jump the 5volt rail to like 6.5 volts with no protection, more than likely the m-board is fried, talk to them, but i dought it will do any good. ed

yea it might be a major hassle trying to replace the mobo...with a system that old you would be better off building a new "budget-box" MaximumPC did it for $300 or $500, cant remember for sure but i can post their exact specs if u want. I take it you arent into gaming or anything.

Back to why it would be a hassle: most prebuilts, like Dells, Compaqs, HPs etc, use small cases that only take a certain size mobo. Therfore if u wanna keep all your old components you'd have to buy a new case....more money spend on an outdated system. another reason u might wanna get a new one.

lol ummm thanks sewy  :D
