Ok guys, I originally posted this in the Malware forum where they were very helpful. After lots of troubleshooting, It was suggested that I post here as it doesn't look like my problem is a malware issue but possibly a software one.

Here is the link to my thread and I hope that someone here can help me out.

When you get that "encountered a problem" box, can you click the link to find out more information, and tell us what the modname is, and if it is the same every time? Thanks.

    Modname:
    xpcom_core.dll
    mshtml.dll
    msls31.dll

Different everytime, these are the last 3 in the past 7minutes..... maybe I should buy a hammer?

hmmm, xpcom_core.dll is a Firefox dll, the other two are Microsoft.

Have you tried start->run: "sfc /scannow"? If not, start with that.

I would also recommend opening a command prompt, and try typing "chkdsk /f", hitting "y" for yes when it asks you if you want to schedule a check, and reboot. Bear in mind, any hard-drive maintence, such as a checkdisk, has a very small potential for data loss, so if there is anything vital, back it up first.

Just some things to start with. :)

Yes I have testing to see what browser it happens more with. At first it seemed to be IE more than firefox but now its about the same...driving me nuts!

I have run the "sfc /scannow" it askedfor myXP CD, finished running and closed? Was it supposed to do something else?

I will run the other now and see what happens.

    Thanks for your patience!

    Ok I did what you said. This popped up in the DOS window;

The type of file is NTFS
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Woul you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

I rebooted, it checked and then closed. Should I have a log somewhere or something?
    Now what?

Both the SFC /scannow, and the chkdsk worked as they are suppossed to. The only way to test it is to browse and see if you still have the crashes. :)

    Yup, had plenty.....

    unknown
    msls31.dll
    mcscan32.dll
    unknown

And so on..... maybe I should just format and do a clean install?

I'll be honest, all I really have for you is a clean install or a repair install. If you can back up your data, the format is always the better choice.

I would actually be not surprised to find out this was hardware, maybe ram.

Ok I'll take that route. It's been 2years since I did it last.

    Thanks for the help regardless!

    Cheers
