From Seven to Fourteen Deadly Sins

The Vatican has put out an additional Seven Deadly Sins (now making it The Fourteen Deadly Sins).

Christian belief (mainly Catholic), is that mortal sins impede a soul's progress in the exercise of virtue and moral good. The creation of the original Seven Deadly Sins, goes back to Pope Gregory the Great of the 6th Century.

When young, I used the acronym “PLAGUES” as an easy way to remember each of the Seven Deadly Sins:
    Pride
    Lust
    Anger
    Gluttony
    Usury
    Envy
    Sloth

According to Monsignor Girotti, who is a close ally of the Pope and the head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, one of the Roman Curia's main court, these Seven Deadly Sins were of a "rather individualistic dimension".

The Vatican has now drawn the following as an additional list of Seven Deadly Sins for our time, that are designed to make worshippers realise, that their vices also have an effect on others:

    1. Genetic modification
    2. Carrying out experiments on humans
    3. Polluting the environment
    4. Causing social injustice
    5. Causing poverty
    6. Becoming obscenely wealthy
    7. Taking drugs

Looking at this new list objectively, I find the majority of these new sins (dependent on specific type of action), can fall into classes of criminal offences. So, personally, I find it to be a good addition for our time.

There will be rumblings about this additional list, given how large a number of members belong to the Catholic Church.

What do you think about this new, additional list to the Seven Deadly Sins?

how much money does the catholic church hav? is it an obscene amount?

    And your point is?

Your same question can be directed to the Mormon Church, the Jewish faith, etc, etc, etc. Consequently:

    1. How does your point make any qualification to any of the new deadly sins?
    2. And to reiterate my question: "What do you think about this new, additional list to the Seven Deadly Sins?" in what sense do you put your question?

any aspiration to individual wealth requires ambition, this does not make us inherently bad, its how we choose to use our achievements

So How does your new point make any qualification to any of the new deadly sins?

Many persons have "aspirations to individual wealth". How would your points make them a "deadly sin"?

I work in a business thats growing, thats good, I live in Sydney... love this town, but with real estate growing ever more expensive I have to aspire to more wealth, though that numbers are not the same, it is still ambition the drives the extreme wealthy, money is not the root of all evil, love of money is

I, as usual, find that the Vatican is just issuing edicts to get noticed. The "new" seven are just subsets of the "original" seven.

Ah yes, the Catholic Church, (Motto: Failing to do anything useful, ever.), always trying to control things it should have no interest in whatsoever. They should stick with their original job of keeping the masses stupid.

I saw this the other day, thought it was a joke or leading into something else. I was raised Catholic, baptized and such, have a problem with the way they conduct things. Indeed the wealth is incomparable. They used the excuse wealth is power and with out it they would not have as much influence in the world.
I am particularly taken back by numbers 2 & 4 being they were fully aware of the Holocaust and chose to do nothing.
Not even to get into how they hide and protect the priests who defile children.

I saw this on the news yesterday, after the stats of 65% of catholics don't go to confession...but if you do, there are new sins to confess.

What I find interesting, to Darlene's point, is, in my experience, people who were raised Catholic are their biggest critics. My husband is the same way. He won't go anymore after growing up going to church and Catholic school.

That is because being raise Catholic shows you the rampaging hypocrisies right up close and personal.

i like others here was brought up a catholic i attended a school from 9 to 15year old that was staffed by nuns and monks where we were told that benevolence and humility were uppermost.

it was not until later years when i went into further education did i realize what a bunch of hypocrites they were, when you learn of the deeds done in the name of the church in past times.

I find it reprehensible that the catholic church should now be adding new sins to the list (who gave them the right)

i have seen a lot of suffering in the world done in the name of the church and little done to stop it by representatives of the church (look at nothern Ireland in the 70s.

please do not be offended by my comments they are not directed at any one person it's just me letting off steam.

Number 7, drugs, alcohol is a drug (one of the worst) so wine is a drug. It isn't just wine there are no restrictions on drink.
I had a cousin recently die, he was a father, Navy Chaplin for ever, drank himself to death I believe. Heard he put away a fifth of Wild Turkey in a day.

    #1 Genetic Modification

What does this mean? Modifying food crops or animals? We've done it the slow way for well over a millennium, the fast way has some dangers, but some major benefits too.

Or are they talking about modifying people? How about some of the really nasty genetic diseases out there, such as Huntington's?

#2 Carrying out experiments on humans.

This one is a bit iffy. If we are talking about involuntary, I'm for it. But if it is with informed consent, then most of the major medical advances were created this way, including vaccines.

    #3 Polluting the environment

No real argument there, but then, this is subject to interpretation. To many Greenpeace members I suspect concrete could be considered a form of pollution.

#4,5 No problem, unless they try to correct it by forcing charity from other people.

    #6 Becoming obscenely wealthy.

Who is to decide? I'm not qualified, nor are they. Microsoft, for all everyones bellyaching, has made the world a better place. They could not nor would not have done this without making money. Maybe the recipients should donate it all away when they die? Sounds like a form of communism to me, but then, maybe it has some (very) small good points.

    #7 Taking Drugs

One mans drink is another mans sin. Personally I think the other man should butt out, and attend to his own vices. But then, I also think we should legalize drugs and get them away from the army of pushers/users recruiting new addicts. Criminalizing it only makes it profitable, which makes it a priority for the pushers to get new customers.

I guess my final thought is this. Churches should not judge science en mass. Specifics, maybe, but to claim infallible truth with the number of times they've not only been proved wrong, but caused real harm in doing so suggests they are less qualified than most. Just my $0.02.

Couple of things I would like to mention:

The Catholic Church isn't ADDING new sins to the list per se. God made it clear through his Word what constitutes a sin. The Catholic Church is simply highlighting some specifics of them at the expense (or ignorance) of other things God considers sin. Each of these in the "new" list COULD be seen as a sin by God, if certains factors prevail. Someone already said wealth is not a sin, but love of money above God is. How you steward in a good way what you have been entrusted with is what God is looking for, as individuals and as the church...be that wealth, education, physical strength, your time etc.

Also just wanted to ask that people continue to be sensitive to others beliefs and religions. Thanks :)

The last thing i would want to do is get into a theological discussion with you Lev as i know you are much better qualified than me.

i was just making a personal view so i will withdraw to the sidelines and just read.

It was a general point to the discussion Bill - not aimed at you particularly. Your words just spoke well to the point I was wishing to make :) As for "qualified" - no - you give me way too much credit, but thank you for your kind words.

Please do continue to add your thoughtful insights to the discussion ok :)

    Amen.
When people speak of the Catholic Church, they are speaking about the people who make up the Church. People are of a sinful nature. It is a fact that they will sin.
But, as a religion, most Catholics love and worship God, His Son, and the works They do. And yes, many are not satisfied with some of their leaders in the Church, just as many are not satisfied in any religion. There is hypocrisy in them all.

As far as "new" sins, like Lev said, each and every one can be set into one of the original 10 Commandments.

    'nuff said :)

All religions are based on theory, their interpretation of words, hence theology. Whos to say one is right or wrong. The ten commandants and the golden rule is what everyone should live by. What is a sin in some religions is not in another. People choose what fits their life style I think and if it doesn't fit, change it, make up new.
Seems to me religion and politics are merging.

Ya. same here Laura and I've felt this way since I was in a Fransiscan run school, so lots of obligatory masses. At 15, I saw through the crap of organized religion and went my own spiritual way and glad that I did. (not because of these guys did anything wrong to me, just misguided IMO).

After 40 years these two phrases still resonate with me. 'Know Thyself' and 'The Golden Rule'. These two have kept me on the straight and narrow path, no need for any other mumbo jumbo garbage! :puke

My 'god' is the universe. I mean even Jesus said it 'Look under any stone and I am there...etc.' It's so obvious!

Thanks for the update BM, my original post was based on The Telegraph's reporting and yesterday's TV news which obviously got it all wrong - it was sensational and misleading coverage.

that's funny, the Franciscans are the only group I even give the slightest amount of respect too. If I was to renounce all my worldly belongings and join something, it would to join the Franciscans.

Re: From Seven to Fourteen Deadly Sins?...No, just a view of today's world

Respectfully, I disagree with your comments about the Catholic Church:
    • "always trying to control things" The Church's representatives express viewpoints as do other prominent leaders.
    • The church does not keep "the masses stupid" - besides you're sounding disrespectful, you have offered neither facts nor basis for this comment.

What I originally posted yesterday based on TV news and the"Telegraph" was sensational and misleading coverage.

Review the corrected information (thanks to update from Burning Monkey's link), that I posted at #28 - I can't see how the Vatican Monsignor's words could justify your comments.

I'm not saying that they were 'bad' people in any way BM, just that their beliefs were misplaced IMO, and really who am I to say yay or nay here?.

I had the best years of my life there, I just don't agree with the religious aspect of all of it. St Anthony's in Kennebunkport, Maine. It was a really great time except for the initiation.:D

Here's a link as they are now. St. Anthony's 4th pic down, the right part was our dormitories, the left classrooms and below was the kitchen/dining room.

I just saw one of my old profs is still alive. I've got to shoot him an e-mail, even if he doesn't remember me! :)

    Crap man, OT again! Sorry
