"The Race that stops a nation" is on today in Australia (Tuesday, our time).
USA's big day is tomorrow (Tuersday), your time. :)

The Melbourne Cup is Australia's major annual thoroughbred horse race. Billed as The race that stops a nation, it is for three-year-olds and over, and covers a distance of 3,200 metres. It is generally regarded as the most prestigious "two-mile" handicap in the world. The event is held on the first Tuesday in November. As of May 7th, 2008, the Melbourne cup's prize money increased 10% to AUD$5.5 million with First place increasing 10% to AUD$3.3 million dollars.

    Tip # 79 Checksums

Camtech Checksums is a free utility for verifying the integrity of files.
A checksum is a value which is computed to allow you to check the validity of a file, similar to a serial number. All files have a unique checksum and if you change even one byte in a file, and then run it through the program again, the result will be different. This is used as a way to verify whether a file has been altered.

Camtech Checksums offers two different types of checksums.
CRC32 is an 8 character string and MD5 is a 32 character string.
Some downloads include the checksum so you can check the file to be sure it hasn't been altered. You can also generate your own checksums for later use or for sending to someone. That way when they receive it they can check it to make sure it hasn't been corrupted.

    It is Freeware for Win95/98/Me/NT/Win2K/XP/Vista

    Tip # 82 BETA software.

Beta software updates are usually released to fix up bugs, etc., in previous versions of the Software, or introduce new features. :)
To be on a slightly safer side, I'd recommend to at least creating a new System Restore point before installing a Beta version of any program.

For the truly paranoid, a FULL backup of your vital data may be a good idea. ;)

Tip # 84 System Restore size for Vista

The MS default for system restore is 15% of your hard drive capacity.
In a 1 terabyte drive (not unusual these days) this would be 150 gigs, when you usually only need a few gigs. Actually a 1 terabyte drive is actually around 930 megs when formatted, so 15% is nearer to 930 x .93 = 139 megs approx. allocated by default.

In 300 gig hard drive (if this was your formatted size), 15% allocated to System Restore would result in 45 gigs for System Restore. :( :( and leave 255 gigs approx. available for other programs. Setting the System Restore size by using "vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=C: /for=C: /maxsize=5GB" , would result in savings 40 gigs approx.

Repeating, to limit System Restore to 5 gigabytes on the C: drive, for Vista use:
Start (ORB) and enter vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=C: /for=C: /maxsize=5GB in the Search/command box.
See MG thread 135866, from Halo, for how to implement this command.
Thanks to Halo, for the above.

Alternative method using Regedit, if you are comfortable with using it.
    In regedit, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-->SOFTWARE-->Microsoft -->Windows-->NT-->Current Version-->System Restore-->cfg
Right click on Disk Percent in the right hand pane ---> Modify--->Decimal

Default will be 15(%) if you haven't altered it previously. Set it to 2% -- 5%, and save heaps of hard drive space, (or around 5-10gigs).
MOST IMPORTANT: This setting DOES NOT stick. If you clear out your old Restore points (and then turn them on again, later), then MS may helpfully resets your System Restore BACK TO 15% and you have to do it all over again.
NB: Vista apparently needs a bigger % allocated to System Restore than XP does.

Spam Volumes Drop by Two-Thirds After Firm Goes Offline
    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/11/spam_volumes_drop_by_23_after.html

The volume of junk e-mail sent worldwide plummeted on Tuesday after a Web hosting firm identified by the computer security community as a major host of organizations engaged in spam activity was taken offline.

Experts say the precipitous drop-off in spam comes from Internet providers unplugging McColo Corp., a hosting provider in Northern California that was the home base for machines responsible for coordinating the sending of roughly 75 percent of all spam each day.

    Tip # 85. Updating Ad-aware 2008 Definitions File 0139.0000

If you forget how to implement the latest definitions, as I do, then creating a Shortcut to the destination Folder is a simple way to post thelatest Definitions download to the right place.

    The instructions for Ad-Aware are:
Who can remember this, so I have a Shortcut, named core for core.zip, as follows, pointing to c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware

This opens the correct sub-Folder so you paste the zip file there, and un-zip it. Make sure you delete the previous definition file (core.aawdef) before unzipping the latest definitions. Hope this makes it easier for you to apply the latest definitions. It does for me. Bazza

Thanks for clicking on the Thanks button, oma, for Tip # 86 (see post # 24 in this thread). to test your open ports.

I'm curious. How did your PC rate and did you find the tip actually useful? :-D

Thanks Bazza. Yes, I tested the ports in my PC with the link you provided and everything came out stealth! :-D Tried Symantec online scan many times over the past years but that one didn't work for me anymore after I switched to Firefox in 2004, not even in IE.

    From Way Off Base today.
    Letmegooglethatforyou.
    http://www.google.com/search?q=Majorgeeks&btnG=Google Search
My note: Not sure of this. I tried it by entering Belarc, as in Belarc Advisor, next to "Google" in the top Search box, as lots of people might do. The Major Geeks link came up 8th out of 10 links displayed. At least 4 other download sites promoted before the MG link appeared. Not good, IMO, for promoting Major Geeks. I may be missing the point entirely. Do you agree, or disagree? It works great if you enter Belarc in the second (lower) Search box by going straight to the Belarc reference in MG.

Tip # 87 Collectors Corner, new MG Forum.

Introduced by MA this week, it allows MG members to show and tell about items in their collections. The link is http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=61

If you forget that, just add 1 to the Lounge URL address of http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=6 (to make it 61--doh) and you will get there. Add it to your Bookmarks, or Favourites, is a much better idea.

Please contribute anything you regard as one of your Collectors items, so we can see what you have. Bazza

The narrative should, of course, have read "Download iTunes 8 and make yourself at home....."

So far I am not at all impressed with this latest release - extremely laggy even when only application running. Takes ages just to open the "About iTunes" window even :(
