yes some of you might be wondering why do i want to switch to a less secure one , well im trying to test soem devices that run on wep and see if they even work.

When i change back to wep from wpa i cant connect to the net. In the router configuration thingy i do it syas ''key 1 cannot be left unblank'' thing is there is already SOMETHING i put there but the dam thing has aglitch or something and wont let me use wep anymore.

    Im using a wireless d-link dI-524 router

    Hi

I would be tempted to reset your router back to default factory settings, this will give you a clean slate, then try the WEP setting.

Reset button needs a paperclip or thin pin, then push the pin into the reset hole in between the WAN and Power sockets. or you can do this in the routers menu from the tools tab and click reset to default.

no harm can come out of reseting, can it?

becuase a few days ago when i was trying to change back to wep i coudlnt connect to the net even when i just put wpa back and eventually i fixed it though i cant remember how. i dont wanna be left without net

    Hi

Sadly not sitting with you infront of that PC its hard to tell what the ill effects of any advice would be, you just need to take it on trust, I just know that if I was having the issue you describe in your firsy post that I would be reseting my modem/router back to default, and have done as its not uncomon for me to forget the password to the damn thing!

Bascially a reset to default is a back to basics as if you just opened the box and installing it from new so all you need to do is remember the settings you had before, so write them down and then try, but also and without reading your routers manual, check to see if you can backup your settings before you reset as many routers allow this so in the event of a wrong setting you can recover to the previous settings.

I believe i had already done this but i guess i forgot so anyways i gave it another go just a few minutes ago and it still says ''key 1 cannot be empty''........

I do put something in there and i tried 64 & 128 mb encryption ,open and shared key, HEX & ASCII. any other suggestions
