    Greetings, robertbiferi...

From the Windows 7 Forum link you posted:
There are repositories of common Windows files already on your machine from which tools such as the System File Checker can pull any data that's needed. However, if those repositories are corrupt or lacking, then SFC will require your Windows disk.

A good practice is to load your Windows disk prior to running SFC - the routine will then have the disk if needed, and it's certainly not going to hurt anything by having the disk onboard...

robertbiferi I can't follow the rules

I ran my command promt as Administrator and ran
    sfc/scannow

It did it and told me

Windows did not find any disk error intagridation.

But when I switch between user account I get a blue screen for 2. sec. then it re boots?

I did go into Performance settings and there is a Dot in Ajust for best Performance. And evey checkBox is empty?

Is this ok I had it set like this to speed up my system but it did this before that I think?

What is going on and do you have any thoughts?

I have a little bit more information.

When I go into controle pannel I click on Secruity settings on the left side.

Then I click on something like Show if anything is wrong or something to that effect.

I did see were it says Your Secrurity Center is turned OFF.
So I click to turn it On and a window says The Security Center can not be turned ON.

    What is this??

robertbiferi I can't follow the rules

OK I think I think I have more going on then I thought?

    1.
When I go into controle Pannel and then to Admin tools I open Security settings. It tells me security center if OFF so I click turn ON. It tells me windows security center can not be turned on.

I do have Avast Free anti virus program is this why?

    2.
When I go into performance settings and settings Tab for Visual effects there are 2. settings that say Ajust for best performance. Then the other setting says the same thing. But if I put a Dot 9in the first on all the checkbox go empty. But if I use the secound one all the checkbox get checked.

    3. I ran SFC from command prompt and I ran command prompt as ADMIN and it did not find anything.

Please tell me what you think about eatch thing I just told you before I gop ojn?

    Thanks

Very possible - check this MS link...

    Have this?
    Start-->Run...

    Type: regedit and hit enter

    Navigate to Computer\HKEY_LoCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wscsvc

If so, open a command prompt and type
    Code:
    net start wscsvc

    When I go to

do you want me to see wscsvc at the end?

    I when to
    Computer\HKEY_LoCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services

I click on services and in the Right hand side of the screen it says
    Vaule Not Found.

    Is this what you ment?

And I typed net start wscsvc in command promt and it told me it is an invalit Command?

You are missing the key if you do not see
    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wscsvc

I'll be searching for a "clean" place on the internet to try and obtain what you need.
    This link
    Code:
    http://www.winhelponline.com/temp/w7-wscsvc.zip
gives me a download window BUT I do not know how safe it is so hold off on doing anything until I have a chance to download and scan it.

Meanwhile read through this and try what it says http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2519899

and read through Action Center http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Security-checklist-for-Windows-7
which is the replacement for security center in Windows 7.

More information I go to run box and type Services.msc and in the services list I can not find
    windows firewall
    action center
    security center

    or anything like these things.

So I can not even try to turn them on or set them to Auto delay or anything??

Did you scan the file yet?

I ask because I had to get started on a project and then it all goes down.

I didn't download it yet and therefore no chance to scan - I had life and problems I had to deal with. (doctor's appt)

This confuses me because there is no left pane in my control panel. (I'm running Win 7 64 bit Home Premium)

Open Control Panel. Do you have Action Center listed? Do you have Windows Firewall listed?

robertbiferi I can't follow the rules

When I go into Controle Pannle I see System and Security and I click that word.

Then I see Security Center and Windows Firewall and they both don't let me change anything.

I even go to the left side were it says Advanced Settings and it wont let me change anything.

And when I go into Administrative Tools and Services nothing in the Services list is Firewall or Action Center or Security Center or anything.

And when I looked for the Registry Key you told me to I found nothing.

So I know something Got to my services files or something like that.

And I did not meen anything by asking if you scanned the file yet I just thought maybe you had it and did not scann it yet.

I could just do a Frash Install but if I don't have to I would like to just use the file?

    Robert,

Assuming that all the threads you've made over the last week or so are all about the same computer, you have one profile that is almost certainly corrupt - the one that causes the BSOD's when you try to logoff/logon to it or switch user to it - I will further assume that this is your 'good' profile, which now appears to be corrupted almost to the point of being unusable, therefore I must advise you to save any and all valuable data away from the computer, check that it is all copied over safely, then go ahead with that fresh install of Windows.

    Ok thanks for the help.

I want to know if I am doing this right?
When I installed my win7. Premiume 64 Bit the first time it had a fue Box Tabs. I did pick the Drive I want it to go on and am I right first I click the Format Tab then Creat Partion?

This is what I did and I think it's right?

And by defult if you just go and let win install it will make 4k Cluster size right?

And I have all SATA2. drives but I like to have them all to work indapandantly and not in a RAID. So in my BIOS it gives me these options
    RAiD
    iDE
    ASCii

so I use ASCii am I right?

Please go down the list and just tell me if I am not right about anything or if anything will hert the system?

And thank you for all your help again I hope everything is going good with you.

Once you have all your data saved away from the 'bad' Windows drive, remove or disconnect any other hard drives, just to be on the safe side.

Next, when you are at the drive selection screen, double-check that the only drive now showing is the correct one, then select it and delete the 'bad' Windows partition. Then select the empty space left by the 'bad' partition and create a new partition then format it.

Allow the Windows installer to select the default cluster size for you.

AHCI is the best mode for the drive - BUT, if the Windows installer fails, you may need to go back and change it to IDE mode. AHCI can be activated after Windows is installed but it's not straightforward, you'll need further advice on that if it happens.

Once Windows is running, don't mess with anything or surf around with it - just install the drivers from your motherboard CD\DVD, allow Windows Update to run until there are no further updates, then come back for further advice on how best to 'tune' it and protect it.

I'm good thanks and I hope you are too :cool

robertbiferi I can't follow the rules

I did not understand what you ment when you told me I can set my drive up as iDE and after win7. installed change it to AHCI?

Because my Motherboard people told me to pick AHCI in the BiOS befor I install win7. and this is what I did last year??

Don't I have to set my BiOS to AHCI and then restart the system with the win7. dic in and let it install the drivers for AHCI?

If AHCI worked last time through the install, use it again :)

    I said:

robertbiferi I can't follow the rules

OK so I will do this

The only Drive I will have connected is the CD DROM.

Keep AHCi set in the BiOS for how to handel drives then reboot with the win7. Disc in.

Then select the drive I want to install win7. on but Delette the Partition that is on it.

Then give it a new Partition and Format it.

Now from what I remember last year when I did this it uses NTFS by default and this is ok.

So do I have all this right?

And just a little thing I would like to know about FAT and how they work?

Every Drive is made up of Sectors and they are around 512 Bytes in size.
And eatch FAT will use a diferant numbert of Sectors to make every Cluster.
So if every Cluster was to be 4k in size it would use around 7. Clusters or so I get all of this.

And why they started making every Cluster smnaller and smaller is becasue if just 1. Bit of Data when into say a 4k Cluster and even though that Cluster can still hold more Data that Cluster gets marked as used I get all of this.

So I always think when ever I am formatting any of my Drives I always see the option for 512 Byte Clusters. And I think I know this is the size of one Sector so why not use 512 Byte Cluster size?

This will make sure every little bit of space is used because nothing is ever 512 Bytes in size.

    Am I not right?

You've done fine so far - except for 1 thing - you've been thinking about cluster sizes ;) even I don't think about cluster sizes, well, not since about 1999!

Cluster sizes are a trade-off, always were, always will be - no matter what size you choose, there will be drawbacks. You use all the space on the drive, Windows will never start anyway - ya gotta allow some slack.

Stay with the default cluster sizes and continue :)

robertbiferi I can't follow the rules

OK I will thanks for getting back to me.

But I only ask because I see a lot about if you use a Drive just to store say Audio and Video and Books and Photos pick 64k Cluster Size.

And I get this if all you are doing is useing a Drive for storing files then no file like Photos or Videos or anything will ever be smaller then 64k and it will use all the Cluster space.
And then move to the next Cluster to put more of the information in I get this.

But I always think why not just pick 512 Bytes I know this is not even one Cluster this is one Sectore.

And would this not be good to go by Sectore by Sector it will realy use every last bit of space when storing Videos audios and so on?

Or what am I not understanding??

You really don't need to understand anything about it. Perhaps, if you were editing movies or music you might need to learn the basics of it. But those that do video/music editing have many different drives so things can be setup on a per-drive basis, according to the use.

Your drive is for Windows, swap file, programs, games, big files, little files and everything in between - it has to be a compromise - stay with the default and remember, if you mention cluster in this thread again, I'll make you go and sit on the naughty step for some time out.

robertbiferi I can't follow the rules

    LOL LOL

I do Video editing and save a lot of work as Uncompressed AVi so I have a lot of Big files.

And I do have a secondary drive that is 500GB and I will be getting biger drives.

And it always made me think because there was 32k Cluster size then with NTFS they whent down to 4k Cluster size and this it to make sure every last bit is used in the Cluster and I get this.

So if I whent even smaller and it can it can go to 512 Bytes this would use even more space?

How dows this breakdon the file system and make it not function right?

  32. satrow

    satrow Major Geek Extraordinaire

Running out of space on the Windows drive will prevent it from starting. Filling a drive more that around 75% will see a big slowdown kicking in (SSD's hit this spot around 85%).

For efficient video editing on a semi-pro/pro scale, you really need 3+ drives, much more for backups. Windows on 7,200, SSD's or RAID's for speed, RAID's for video and another drive to dump the finished movie to.

If you know that all files on a drive will always be the same size, then you can work out what you need easily. If all files will be tiny, setting it up for that is easy too, as it is if all files will be very large.

I don't know how serious you are but this site was always one of my first goto sites for data when configuring serious video editing machine.
