    Hi,

On Tuesday, 12/28/10 between 7:30 and 8:00PM, my PC popped up with the Full Scan virus. Various windows told me I was out of Hard disk space and RAM (not true) and that I needed to run a defrag. At the time, I had stepped away from my computer for a few minutes and was running Firefox and Microsoft Word.

After attempting to delete any files I could find that were created or modified at that time, alerts still kept popping up. A friend recommended your malware removal process.

I went through all the steps and am attaching my logs. I did not have trouble running any of the scans. The alerts and popups have stopped, but I'm seeing 2 strange things.

1 - On startup I get a messsage that says "Catalyst Control Centre: Host application has stopped working."
2 - Some of my desktop icons are ghosted out (as if i had just Cut them, but not Pasted yet). The only icons displaying at normal color saturation are the newly installed scan programs and standard icons like Computer, Network, Admin, Control Panel and Recycle Bin.

I don't know if these things should be alarming or not, or if I've gotten rid of the virus entirely. Any assistance would be fantastic.

    Thank you for your time.
    - Kat

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

This is for your ATI graphics card. You may need to post about it in the Hardware or Software Forum if problems persist after we finish your cleanup. There is more to do.

You have no protection software installed? Did you uninstall it to run the cleaning procedure?

I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove eveything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and defintely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [AvgUninstallURL] cmd.exe /c start http://www.avg.com/ww.special-unins...YAOQBNADEAMABCACsAMgA"&"prod=90"&"ver=9.0.872
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [oUrVPuPddVDgXoF.exe] C:\ProgramData\oUrVPuPddVDgXoF.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [kGbMkb5013] C:\PROGRA~2\kGbMkb5013.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [APD2uCqpq] C:\PROGRA~2\APD2uCqpq.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [zG0czqS9kTgg] C:\PROGRA~2\zG0czqS9kTgg.exe
    O16 - DPF: {E06E2E99-0AA1-11D4-ABA6-0060082AA75C} -

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks for your advice. I did have AVG installed prior to starting this clean-up and will re-install when it's done.

I followed your instructions and the two new logs are attached.

Most icons still appear ghosted out. From what I can tell, anything that existed before all this is ghosted (I can still click on/into them though) and any new folders or files created, the icons appear normal.

Also, now I can't run any programs. When trying to launch programs, I get an alert popup that says the file path of the program and "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion."

    Help?

    Thanks,
    Kat

    Rebooting will easily solve that.
