You were told wrong. A program like Eraser basically rewrites zeros where the data was so it is unrecoverable. Eraser will do selected files or directories as well as entire drives, so just be careful with it

out of those, note worthy options are and depends on how much you want to destroy the data to how long your willing to wait for the process to complete.... some of the erase processes multiwipe the data and jumble it all up then erase again etc

both the methods above are found in East-Tec DisposeSecure 2006 3.4

but a free good option to use would be Active KillDisk 3.1 Build 2151 only does 1 pass in the free version but you could always run it a few times.

also many drive manufacturers have a drive utils that write zeros to the wholw drive, thus wipeing ( not as secure as the above methods ) depending on drive manufacturer you should find all common ones here http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads8.html


EDIT: must add the above methods if your "entirely wipe out any history on my com" question means the complete HD, which will remove everything, including Windows/operating system and all data, SO if its just the day to day history, when using the net etc that you want gone then the program listed by Major Attitude is the way to go.
