    Hello,

I am still attempting to find what may be "choking" the performance on this PC (running XP & Firefox). I have "disabled" (and perhaps should "UN-install"?) two of the four remaining FF "Add-Ons" I had, leaving only Download Statusbar (0.9.6.3) and McAfee SiteAdvisor (2.8).

In my (free) Zone Alarm FW, under FW>Zones, I have three things listed there that I am not sure of (though I "think" that they are there by "default" - and need to be there):

Name - Entry Type - Zone
    Realtek RTL8139...(NIC) - Adapter Subnet - Internet
DHCP Server (?) - IP Address - Trusted
Looback Adapter (?) - IP Address - Trusted

Does this all look correct, please?
    Thanks in advance ...

Thanks ... this won't be very "technical", but I'll do my best ...

Ok, I loaded FF in Safe Mode, however it made very little (if any) difference (there "may" have been an ever-so-slight boost - but hardly noticeable ... or perhaps it is that I simply lean towards being optimistic, and simply "believe" there was a difference?) I suppose I could attempt to "time" (measure) the "difference" - but I would need a very good stop-watch, one that measures in at least the 10th's, if not the 100's, of seconds).

By "choking", I mean "slow" (to respond, to load pages, frequent "Time-Out" upon reload/refresh, etc.).

I can actually "hear" (and "see") the difference between the few & far between occasions when the PC is operating "quickly" (when I can "hear" the flood or rush of activity, which sounds like a thundering "herd" (?) or group of "horses" [or even a single horse at a full gallop] and which coincides with the green "activity" light blinking/flashing furiously), and its "usual" mode of operation, when it sounds as if a one-legged person is sort of "hopping" along (and then again, the green light flashes accordingly - slow, in sync with each "hop" - as if it [the machine] is "laboring', or is "choked").

The rapid action/activity sound and flashing (when the PC seems rather fast) is similar to when I do a cleaning with, say, CCleaner, or when I Defrag - I can tell that there's A LOT "going-on". My internet surfing is rarely such as this (though on occasion, it is), and I am hoping to find a "happy medium", at least, though again, it seems as if something is "choking" the performance, most of the time.

Well, that's about as "technical" as I currently know how to be.

Thanks Mr. Trent and to "iwunderdownunder"

Hey there ya "High (and apparently fast) Flyer"! You're correct - it has been awhile. And thanks for laughing (AND "hi-jacking" ... just kiddin'), and I knew it was a li'l funny (sort of like when a customer walks into a garage and attempts to "replicate" the "funny sound" that their vehicle is making - for the mechanic! ), but I was simply doing my best to be descriptive (whew! glad no one "heard" me replicate that "herd" of horses!) :-D ...

    C ya `round!

I suspect you are correct sir - I have a much faster connection myself, at home - but this PC is my folks, and mom "ain't payin'" for anything more than DSL (was hard enough to get her to pay another $5/month to upgrade from dial-up! rolleyes :-D ...

    Thanks as always ...

;) I remember ALL too well tryna explain to the guys and gals in the hardware section the kind of noises my PC was making when I suspected my PSU was dodgy...I think IIRC I said something along the lines of "It sounds like a crew of men on mopeds are revving up in there"...LOL

And do you know something..? I replaced the PSU and STILL the damn machine makes a bloomin' awful noise upon firing it up! I need to investigate further...but my "to do" list is just too long right now lol

"... a crew of men on mopeds are revving up in there" - hilarious - though it could be worse - could be a gang of Harley's!

Well, if you've tried everything else, I have a very nice set of hammers (you may view one of `em sitting atop my neck in the avatar top/left of this post! :banghead) ... perhaps I could float one of `em across the pond in some sort of large, heavy-duty bottle or something??

    Good luck-n-thanks again!
