game performance

This isn't about any specific game but I figured this would be a satisfactory place for the post.

About a month ago I noticed that while playing games my fps would lag behing severely. After contacting hp, ati and a few forums which were suggested to me and following their advice I thought I had the problem fixed (basically all I did was download PC Latency and update my BIOS). Smooth fps especially in Half Life games (hovered around 90).

A few days ago I started having problems again. As with the first time I noticed it primarily in Half Life, small drop off which began to increase below 60 fps line. Then other games such as Battlefield 1942 began to lag behind and even my SNES emulator shot me the bird and got a bit choppy.

It isn't always instantaneous, sometimes it takes a few minutes. However, any game I try to play becomes choppy eventually. I've checked for updates on drivers and believe everything is ok. The PC Latency Tool is still up and running correctly, as far as I can tell and I have used every virus scanning tool I know of and made sure my computer is clean. Changing resolutions, game specifics like shadows and graphics card settings seem to slow the process sometimes but it always happens eventually and the slowing may just be my wishful thinking clouding my judgement...

So, for those of you who made it to the end, any suggestions?

 

Im intrested to know whats this PC Latency tool you talk about; I have this problem on my laptop.

 

The PC Latency Tool allows you to set a desired latency for different components in your computer. All it does, as far as I know and can see, is smooth out what your computer already runs at. So, instead of spikes into the good levels it should stay steady getting rid of jumps in sound and video.
