Game server setup?

Hey, im new i hope this is the ryte catagory to post.. sorry if im in the wrong sector. My friends and i have had a great idea.. we wanted to design and make our own game. then we wanted to put it online possibly to just have a few friends play. as my name says i have no clue what the heck im doing.. im computer literate.. but im not as far into it to know how to do this stuff.. so if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.. i would need to know what kind of software.. instructions whatever you can give me.. thanks a whole bunch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Design your own game eh?

What are your objectives.
a) What is your game about/what does it do
b) How do you want to achieve it
c) How long do you want to put into it
d) What skills will you need to make it

For an idea of whats involved in making a fairly common game genre, 3D FPS: First, you write the story and script the story. Then, you begin concept art stages. Once you've got the final concept, you give that to your 3D Modeller, who turns the art into actual models. They will then animate/texture as appropriate. The models are imported into the engine (Quake, Unreal, Source) and then placed into maps.

I don't know if you're trying to make a 3d or 2d game... not yet anyway.

You might consider writing a mod for an existing game rather than having to buy the engine (eek). Might be an idea to do some serious reading on the topic.

soo i need to hire people..? i mean it was just gunna be my friends and i............ I have some experiance with like really simple game construction game editor.. and weve spent weeks writing ideas and organizing our game. we were aiming for a game that you build up armies advance technology etc.. and fight one another... in a sense i thought it would be easier, and cooler. haha. But since my friends live on my street and were really devoted to the idea.. we were gunna spend a little time each day at least 3 times a week or so.. doing what was nesscery. we were going to make it simple since its our first major game production.. so it was going to be 2d..... anything else you can offer would be great. thanks alot you guys!
