whenever i play Tribes (or any other game for that matter) my cpu jumps from around 2-5% to 100%... so it slows down my performance quite a bit, I've reformatted my comp and reinstalled the drivers and everything but it's stillllll being a poon

    Sys specs=
    Intel Celeron 2.20ghz
    768 RAM
GeForce FX 5200 AND Crappy Mobo Vid card: Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller

I switch from my geforce to my onboard just to see if anything changes but it doens't ;/

100% cpu usage during games is normal, don't worry about it.
if the games themselves are running slow it most likely is your video card becoming overloaded, try reducing resolution/AA/AF. If the games just started slowing down, let us know.

they started slowing down like 2 days ago... the configuration i had befor ehte slowdown was the same and now.... I heard this pop inside my computer and then like tribes slooooooowed down and the computer cut off for like 7 hours... so i couldn't find out what the problem was... then when i cut it on everything was slowed down... AFTER a while though everything worked fine excpet for my games...

check your video card for apparent/obvious physical defects.

    Do a dxdiag.

My friend suggested that... but the fan seems fine, my comp still runs fine it's just when i play games that it goes all super crazy on me..

I took out my geforce and it seems the same as the day I got it, other than alot of dust on it..

Have you disabled onboard video in bios when you have the 5200 installed?

Can you post the full specs of your computer,or downlaod everest/sandra from download section and find out,and also the O.S you are using.and check all your fans are spinning "if the 5200 has one"

Still getting the same problems.. before i reformatted i had all the new drivers and directx and everything I don't know what happened, my friend suggested the cpu, ram, or the psu but i don't know how to check any of them

I would suggest you also update the video card drivers for whichever one you decide on using. (your onboard doesn't support Transform and Lighting so you should preferably be using the FX5200)

You also have a lot of useless services running in the background, many of which you could either set to disabled or manual.

This would free up a lot of valuable resources.

Also check what is loading at Startup and running in the background.

How do I get rid of the useless services? or for that matter how do I know which one is useless or not? lol sorry i'm slow D:

Go to Start, Run and type in services.msc then O.K. (Different from msconfig )

That is a list of all the services XP uses, many of which aren't needed.

The site I normally recommend for a list of which service is safe to disable is being renovated at the moment (http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/InstallXPHome/installxphome1.htm), however THIS site will tell you which service does what.

Only turn off one service at a time, reboot and use the computer then if there are no problems do another.

Do not do them all at the same time, and what works for them may not for you.

It is only a guide and not gospel.

Alright sorry for the delay, been a bit busy... Anyways neither of them worked so I don't know what's wrong, my friend insists it's my cpu, psu, and ram and I'm starting to agree with him. I don't want to have to replace parts for my computer but it looks like that's what i'm headed too :( I can't play Sims2 anymore :(:(:(

I would check if the fan is spinning while the computer is actually on. Intel processors have built in limiting devices that prevent them from overheating. Its possible that loading the OS works because it doesn't put much strain on the processor and the heatsink alone can handle the heat generated, but when you load up a game the additional heat causes the processor to limit its speed to prevent your computer from frying.

Although anything is possible and no one can say with any certainty what it is, I would very much doubt it.

Anyway, get a copy of SiSoftware Sandra and carry out a few tests and that will soon tell you if any hardware is failing.

We have already been through that, it's your Everest log not Sisoft Sandra.

There's no point really in supplying the log, it's pretty much a system summary similar to Everest.

You need to run the various benchmarks and tests in Sandra to test your hardware if that's what you suspect.

If you are unsure of it's use then read the help file.
