    System:
    Dell Dimension DIM3000
    512 MB RAM
    Windows XP Home SP 2

    Problem:
My computer operates fine except for two issues which may or may not be related.

    1) My system sounds are garbled. The Windows startup sound sounds like it choppy and totally messed up, kind of like there is a lot of processing going on in the background. The shutdown sound is the same way. I've uninstalled and reinstalled my SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio driver, and I don't have any "!" in my device manager.

    2) My system occasionally stutters, meaning that if I move my mouse in a circle, every 1 second it will stop for a split second, then move again. This can also be "heard" when I listen to music or watch video files. Every 1 second it will stutter. It doesn't happen all the time. In fact, it only seems to happen when I load a new application, or if I come back to my computer after a while and try to do something (like start an Explorer window, or load another app).

I'm pretty diligent about spyware. I run Ad-Aware frequently. I run SpyBot frequently and I run the free version of AVG AntiVirus program. Nothing has been found, and my system appears to be clean but the problem still happens.

I thought there might be some spyware inside Internet Explorer, so I downloaded FireFox and I still see the same thing.

Any ideas? Do you need any further info? If you need a HijackThis logfile, let me know, and I'll post it as a file, not as text :)

    Thanks for the help.

This may not be a malware problem. It could just be a driver problem, a resource problem (like some processes using too much of your CPU time), etc. If you want to rule out malware, work thru the below standard cleaning processes.

    Please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).
