I've been trying to run Microsoft e-book reader on my IBM Aptiva 242. The text in all e-books (and the titles on the Library page) is garbled when I am offline and only becomes readable when I am connected to the internet. It's driving me crazy. I have done the activation process (several times), and tried uninstall/reinstall, even a reformat and reinstallation of Windows (98). Does anyone have a solution ?

Hi, fourcourt, and welcome to MG!

Have you tried a search of the MS Knowledge Base? Just try "garbled text in Microsoft Reader."

MS is really interested in PUSHING the MS Reader, and is even giving away e-books to get people to try it, hoping they'll get to like it. Response, according to PCMag and PCWorld, has been dismal. People just aren't ready to read full-length books on computer monitors, I guess. Hardly anybody is downloading the freebies.

    Worth a try.
