Plagued with slugs! Didn't want to use nasty slug pellets, so, I used the old method of keeping them at bay. Have a big old breakfast, save the egg shells, crush them finely and sprinkle them around your precious plants.

Another trick for slugs is to place a small saucer of beer near where they congregate. They seem to gather there.
Sounds like a joke. I know. But studied Horticulture for a couple of years and have seen it work.

20 min before i read this post i was just outside checking my roses as they are just coming into bloom and the greenfly are very active.

I use a little washing up liquid diluted in water to get rid of the beasties.

Greenfly, nasy little devils, washing up liquid, great! if you know anyone with the tobbaco habit use their ciggarette buts as well, chuck a fist full of cigarette buts in a bucket of water let it soak for a couple of days, don't forget to spray the undersides of the leaves, Rhubarb leaves are a good greenfly deterrant, chop them up (the rhubarb leaves) mix with the cigarette buts, keep using the washing up liquid it helps the solution to stay on the leaves

I totally agree with you Hrlow2 - coming from the Pacific Northwest we were plagued with slugs - the beer works great! I used it every spring to get rid of those nastified slimy critters!!

And then what? Do they die from the beer or do you kill them?

We started gettting them last year. I haven't seen any this year though, but might want to try to be proactive.

Once you get enough, transport to another location. They can't crawl a straight line themselves. :-D.
Have anybody you don't like? ;)

Whenever I saw them (always in the morning), I would just pour salt on them. I never actually saw them in plants. So, does the dish need to be really low to the ground or can they get into a normal size one?

Some garden centre's sell them as SLUG PUBS. but yes the rim of the saucer needs to be level with the soil

^Thanks. I'm going to give it a try.

Ok..one more question. I haven't seen any yet this year. Should I wait until I see one?

Just because you haven't seen one doesn't mean they're not around.
Put one out and see if any come around.

    A very cheap way:

My Boss would always pour outmeal around where they were. They love eating oatmeal so much they gorge themselves to death.

I tried it and it works.

Slugs tend to come out when it is cool, so you rarely see them through the day in warm weather. You can usually see their slime trails in the morning, a silvery dried mucus residue.
BTW the slugs drown in the beer if you leave them long enough. Get a 2 inch deep pot, sink it into the soil up to the rim and fill with beer. The slugs can't crawl out.
Worst pests in the garden. :major

Thanks guys. I'm going to put a tuperware container out tonight with some beer in it and see if I can catch me some slugs. LOL

Only thing I have to make sure is that I remember it's out there or my dog my wind up getting drunk. :-D

LauraR Was your beer party for the slugs a success ? I,m curious if it worked. Not that I have a problem with them. My problem was squirrels. They were chewing the branches off my rose bushes and eating my roses, digging up the roots of my potted plants. But I fixed those fury tail rats. I have a friend that get an occasional slug or two and if yours worked I would tell her to try it.
