    Good Day,
I have a Gateway Notebook. It's a NE56R31U model. Has a 320gb HD running with Windows 8. At start-up it goes past the loading of the "Gateway" logo then say's "NO BOOTABLE DEVICE FOUND" press any key to continue. It then goes to a "Boot Menu" that's totally empty..

    Any suggestions?
    Thank you

Make sure there are no disks in the drive, memory cards or other external drives or components.

Enter bios F2 or Del and select the hard drive as the first boot device and disable other boot devices if possible including network boot options.

Did the computer come with windows 8 or have you installed it and do you have a copy of windows 8 handy? Also what's the age of the laptop and can you think of anything that you've changed recently that could have caused this, how long has he laptop been working prior to this problem?

Offhand, this sounds like a failure of either the hard drive or the drive controller on the motherboard.

Based on the model, I'm guessing it's under a year old and still under manufacturer's warranty. Any repairs should be covered at no charge through Gateway.

If you're attempting to save data, you may be able to temporarily remove the drive if there's an easy to open trap door on the bottom of the PC. Remove the hard drive, hook it to a working PC. If the working PC is able to read the drive, you can transfer the data.

Do not, however, do any other disassembly on the PC if it's still under mfr. warranty - doing so may void the warranty.

    Hope this helps. :)

What were you doing before you started to get the error?

I confirmed it's the hard drive. I ran 3 different hard drive scans with all saying NO HD found. I was able to reach customer care at Gateway. The unit has 3mths left under warranty and there going to fix it.
    Thank You

The hard drive would not be causing this, the motherboard SATA chipset would be. I would be telling Gateway to take the unit back, and refund your money on it. Gateway started as being Garbage systems, they have done a 360 and become again garbage systems.

I tell people anymore to stay away from them, Dell, HP/Compaq, if they are looking for anything. The one brand that we have had good luck with, have been Lenovo for my higher end customers, Toshiba for average day budget minded customers, along with Acer systems for the same.

I have never had any issues with Acer or Toshiba Satellite systems. Especially the Toshiba Satellites with the AMD CPU/GPU sets.
