I have a Gateway desktop with a DH16W1P DVD drive. The drive shows that it has the latest driver but the registry is corrupt. How can I correct this or can I reload the OS without over writing my fifes.

    Hi

What you could try is to in Device Manager is to delete/uninstall the DVD drive and then reboot as Windows picks up the driver again at boot as the majority of them are default drivers.

I have disabled the drive and restarted the system. I get the following message in device manager

Windows cannot start the device because the configuration in the registery is either incomplete or damaged.
    (Code 19)

System Restore is the way to fix a corrupt registry (that's what it is designed for).

So restore to a time when the pc was working.

How did it come to stop ?

Did you install or uninstall some software to do with the drive?
Nero7 has known compatibility issues with Vista. Or was Nero there first and is this an upgrade to Vista?

I checked system restore but it only displays current restore. Not like what it looked llike in XP.
Not sure when it failed since I don't use the drive that often,
I do have Nero 8 Suite. I tried to delete it in control panel but it just hangs,
It failed some time after installing SP1

    It does look different

    Open the control panel
backup your computer under System and Maintenance heading (odd well yes)
Select repair windows using system restore under tasks (left pane)

    or

use system restore to fix problems (right pane)

A list of restore point like the one in my pic should open.

My system only stores and saves the last checkpoint. I even installed my Vista DVD on another system with the same results. I looked at John Barnett's Vista Support with no help. Am I missing some system software?
