I have a newly purchased AMD Phenom II 3.0ghz (quad core) with a Radeon 4870 1gig GPU.

When i Attempt to install my copy of Gears of war, i get the following messages :

To run Gears of War with your current hardware setup, you must install the following software update or updates:

+ AMD Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2.16

If you do not install this software, at some point the game will stop and your progress will be lost.
To run Gears of War with your current hardware setup, you must either install the AMD Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2.16 or get the latest driver for your brand of processor from the www.amd.com website. To install the update, click INSTALL.

If you do not install this driver or the latest driver from the website, at some point the game will stop and your progress will be lost.

First of all, why would a processor driver update be neceassry when i possess one of the newer processors available.
I am not going to jack with processor drivers for a game.

I would simply like some input at this point, as i have not even attempted to play the game because of these requests made by the software.
Im wondering if my processor is so new that the G.O.W. Engine does not recognize it, and is making an improper request for an 'update' .

At this point i am simply looking for advice, i am not going to change major system drivers for a game .

Any advice or recommendations are welcome .

    Thanks in advance !

    Hi

You using XP? If so the AMD Processor Driver allows the CPU to split jobs over the cores effectively, XP didnt have this natively built in whereas Vista does (but may still need the driver installed), SP3 for XP adds more compatablity, but still needs the updated CPU driver. This driver also controls the cores temp and compatability for some software.

    driver here

Just do a System restore point or full image backup before installing, would suggest the same with any install driver or software, but not noted any issues with this driver.

from what i can remember, if you did the service pack update(s) through windows update, rather than downloading a stand-alone installer, that particular update should have been done automatically. If you just downloaded the service pack installer, then you would have had to do the amd update manually, because some people were getting errors after the sp install.
