    Hi and Welcome

While we do at Majorgeeks fill in quite a few of these surveys for folk, we do also like to know what school or university that this information is going to be used by and for, so if possible give us the project synopsis (I know its on Geek Culture but project outlines are generally much longer)?

And also will you update us on the findings?

I was thinking I'd post the tallied response, and a link to the article, right here.

As to the school, I'm at Frostburg University in Maryland. The class is an intro to Journalism, and we've been assigned a feature article to be placed on the class blog a week from today. The specifics, outside of the structure of a feature article, are wide open. Currently, I'm still struggling to fine-tune the focus of the piece.

As a grad of U of Md, you got my survey answers.

    I took it.

I don't think geek and nerd are used interchangeably, btw. I think nerd is used more as a derogatory term to describe a look or demeanor someone has. I think geek is used to talk about someone who is into electronics/technology (particularly computers) and/or science.

Theyre both labels that came from outside. Im just a guy on a quest for knowledge and to not live a life of stupidity. Probably like all of us around this part of the internet. If that makes me a geek or a nerd, then rock on. Major Geek I am! Geeks rule the world and will forever be above those who look down upon us.

Great, now people are botting for this title. Means my efforts of actually working for it were in vain.

What does botting for the title mean?

I agree, and I think this is best illustrated by a simple question: Would you describe yourself as a geek? Several regulars here would probably agree that yes, they would.

Would you describe yourself as a nerd?

Besides, if "geek" wasn't a positive term and "nerd" wasn't a negative, this would be the MajorNerds forums! :foolish

I took journalism classes... I remember the pain. :( I'll take your survey after dinner. :wave

    Hi BunniRabbi

Many many thanks for your follow up post, I personally apprieciate it and have just filled out your survey.

Geeks and Nerds well are just titles that are given to stereotypical types in a specific area, while I wear a shirt and tie for work and not the stereotypical nerd/geek in jeans and a logo'd t-shirt I would in many circles be called a geek, do I mind NO, doesnt bother me as I'm not being called a butthole, but is it right, yes and no, while I know more than average about computing, thats my choice, just like someone who decides to take up kinitting as a specialism could be called a knitting geek/nerd and the list gos on for all aspects of life as a football fan could be called a football geek.

Geek seems to be the more common form of the computer variant of so-called 'Nerds', and like LauraR said, is often considered a separate entity these days.

That said, there are computer businesses in my area called The Nerd shop, (for a P.C. shop), Hire a Nerd, (for a P.C. repair service). So I suppose in this country the terms tend to be considered more interchangeable, at least in this part of the world.

Personally, I don't really care whether I'm referred to as a computer geek or nerd, or whiz, guru, or whatever. I just do what I enjoy and am reasonably proficient at it. Never been one for social comformoty, anyway.;)

No one has called me a nerd since 9th grade, and I am hardly ever called a geek by anyone. But that's probably more because I don't look like one than anything else. And no, I don't mind either title, unless it is obvious that the person is deliberately trying to insult, but then it's the intent, not the term, that irritates me. :)

Even though I have never been accused of having any culture whatsoever . . . :-D . . . I took the survey.

I agree with Phantom that the term Geek is more centered on computer/software aficionados then Nerd - and I also agree with LauraR that the two titles are becoming to mean two different things.

At any rate, I don't care what people call me. A friend and I were talking a while back about something along this line, and she asked me what she should call me . . . I told her that since we've know each other for over half our lives - (at work; at home; angry; happy; drunk; sober; sad . . . ) that she could call me any damn thing she wants! She's earned it . . . ;)

I think a Geek is someone who has a keen interest in any subject,a nerd also has a keen interest in a given subject but is a virgin.

LoL@the 'White and Nerdy' LOL I do some of the things that guy does, (I have Stephen Hawking in my library - all of them). I don't ride a dicky yuppy bi-wheel thingy, with a skid-lid that looks like it was a stolen prop from one of the Alien movies.;)

If anyone asks, "Are you a Nerd or a Geek?." I say, "Neither, I'm an intellectual. And of you have ask what's the difference, then you aint one." And at 6' and 200lbs and often in camos, I don't get asked that question very often. ;)

Interesting how we seem to assume that geeks and nerds look a certain way...
