Geek Gods, help!

Optimization? Enlighten me.

Well I wanted to start a website. That was easy. Next step I guess is to get traffic, Right? Wow. I've asked so many people how to optimize. And every so called "Internet/Computer genius" I know always gives me the same response. I dunno. What the hell, Its probably the single most important thing, but I dunno. Can anybody reccomend a book that is "Userfriendly/for dummies. Or some website that can explain from the begining in laymans terms. Im so frustrated everybody says " Just get linked up to bigger websites." but they say it so off hand like thats all it takes. I mean its money were talking about, the diffrence between having a website that gets 100,000 unique IP visitors and 2,500 is the diffrence of money so how can it be soooo simple. Somebody please enlighten me. I need it badlly!!!!

thanks for response I want to learn how to optimize my website. Its not up yet but it will be in a couple of weeks. So i want to learn like step by step the method of google optimization. Like linking meta tags, things internal to the website as well as things external. I merged your new thread with your old thread which has the explanation. (I thought I saw a similar post last night before I passed out for bed )

Optimization can be somewhat of a game. I'm not fully knowlegable in this area because truthfully, it's more marketing than anything else and I'm just not interested in marketeing. Suffice to say that there is software that does "play the game" for you so to speak but that scan be risky as if you are caught, your site may be "blacklisted" by search engines.

Google changes up their ranking every few months which means you could be in the top 10 pages one month or the last page the next. The only surefire way that I know of to maintain a good rank is to pay them; and by "them" I mean all search engines.
