I know there's already a few posts like this, but to my understanding every instance of infection with this particular virus is different, and needs to be dealt with separately.

AVG is picking up a virus called Generic FakeAlert.b and it can't fully remove it. McAffee (Yes, I'm using both) is constantly telling me that it's removed it, but I get the warning again in a matter of seconds.

I've already tried using SmitFraudFix, but instead of opening the tool it just opens a blank command. I've also seen a few very long and complicated fixes, but I'm not willing to spend hours on something that may not even work for me.

    Hi login error,
    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please begin by uninstalling one or the other of your antivirus programs ... you knew I was going to say that! :D You can uninstall AVG using add/remove programs or you can run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool (SymNRT) If you know you shouldn't be running both at once, then you'll probably know the reason why as well. It's not enough to disable one or the other, you actually have to uninstall it completely.

If you want to remove this infection from your computer completely, the easiest way to do this is to follow the procedures in the READ & RUN ME FIRST. The scans in this procedure do take out FakeAlert and will give us information as to what files might remain on your system that still need getting rid of. For someone who has a fast internet connection and is fairly good at following directions, these will take you about an hour.

Ok, I'll do that then. Is there any way I can +rep you, or something like that?

Well I've been at it for around 3 hours now...I downloaded all of the programs, but after scanning with the first one my problem stopped. Should I go through with the rest of the steps, or am I good to go?

    Hi login error,
I recommend finishing the set of instructions, because it's very rare for there to be one piece of malware on a computer. Since you've done the preliminary work, it won't take that much longer to run the scans and then we can look at them and make sure there isn't anything hanging around that could cause the infection to start back up.
