Do any of you spend any amount of time Geocaching? A friend and I just started doing this in our free time, and it's pretty awesome. Here's a link to http://www.geocaching.com/ if you want to know more about it. We've found a dozen or so as of today, just using different apps on our phones.

I'm still learning a lot about it, but I'm going to hide one this weekend. I've only ever looked for them, so this should be pretty interesting to see how it goes. Anyway, I just wondered if anyone else did it, and what you thought about it. Thanks for any kind of reply you can give me. :cool

Oh my .. I had not ever heard of such a thing. I thought the thread said geocoaching first...and wondered what that meant :-D What amazes me most of all is the fact that there's one hidden somewhere in my high street!!!! To think, in my dead eyed little town.

I might take a mini - break from malware removal and go cache hunting...sorry Chas :-D

Seriously though, great post Paxton, never seen or heard of anything like it before. How the times are changing.

Can you elaborate on what kind of things are hidden in these caches/pods whatever? I am soooOOoo intrigued now. What will you be hiding, what kind of item will you use? I wanna go out and do one now but I have not got a super duper satnav internet phone or anything, it's just an 8 year old nokia :-D

Sure, I can do that. We've taken pictures of some of the ones that we've found so far. It's really up to the person hiding them what goes in. There's always a log book (or strands of paper) so that the people who find it can sign it). And if you take something, you're supposed to put something back.

There are things called "Geocoins" that you can buy (look on amazon.com) and activate at the website I listed above. If someone takes a geocoin, they're supposed to put it in another cache, and list on the site that they took it, and where they put it. So If you activate one, you can watch where it goes, etc.

I think with mine, I'm going to put in a log book and a disposable camera. I've heard that's pretty cool. When the camera is full of pictures, I'll develop them and put them online. (I think I'll be able to put them on the cache's page) and everyone that'd found it can go to the page and see the pictures. But eventually I'm going to buy a bunch of geocoins and things like that as well. Here are the pictures I had easiest access to. There are some "G" geocoins in a few of the pictures. We haven't had anything to put in yet though, so we left them there.

Also, sometimes you're asked to bring something specific. There's a "Pencil Exchange" near my house.

I have a few more pictures, but I don't want to double post. LOL

ALSO: The stamp you see in picture 4 is something unique to that person.

What is in the second picture?

The second picture was the hardest one to find so far. It was a 35mm film container, nothing to trade just a bunch of strands of paper to sign your name on (and my hand and arm). It was hidden under a bunch of leaves and a downed trail sign. It took us quite a while to get it.

I've often heard the term and actually just saw a bumper sticker on a car for it, but never bothered to look up what it was as it sounded scientific to me and not very interesting.

That actually does look fun. I may have to register and my girls and I can do it some.:)

My son in law found one near a Starbucks hidden in the apron for the light pole. He even went as far as buy a man-purse to use Geocaching. I don't have time for the sport.

I use to go geocatching with 2 friends. My one friend came here from denver Co and he was into this. It was pretty fun. Not to many hidden things in my area. If I remember we had to buy a gps to track the coords and find the items that people left and then place something of our own. I want to get into metal detecting but no areas around here to find much stuff IMO.

We did one called "The Wailing Wall". The cache was in a 35mm film container. When we got there we thought we'd found it right away. However there was a note in it that read "Not this one". After looking around on the rock out cropping we went through about 30 film containers with the same note until we found the real one.

This shows how many caches are around Cranbrook. Over 3,000. Cranbrook is "buried" in the middle of the picture.

I have to admit it does seem kinda awesome:) It reminds me of searching for stashes in Stalker call to pripyat.

Showed it my dad and he wants to go and find the stash just down the road, literally. Its in a muddy farmers field,I'll have to get some off road tires for his wheelchair:-D

I've also looked into it, but have yet to go out and do it.

Also, it appears I've been a member since 2006 on the geocaching site. Shows how often I do it, that I forgot I was a member. :)

Which explains all the newsletters I've been getting.:-D
