Helping a friend set up a second hand PC. They've been given. It runs on Windows XP. I know Microsoft no longer support XP. I've been told that anti-malware won't protect it any more. How true is this final statement? It only has 256 MB RAM. I'm wondering whether to recommend upgrading it a bit or whether it should just be thrown. I've tried putting Vista on it but it says it doesn't have the hardware to cope with Vista.

MS Security Essentials is still being updated but that will end sometime in July. I don't know the exact date.
I have the paid version of Malwarebytes installed and that is working fine.
I have the free version of SpywareBlaster and that continues to update.

As far as browsers, XP can only use IE 8 and that is no longer being patched.
But the malicious malware reboval update KB890830 is still being offered every month for XP.
I'm not sure about Firefox. I think 38.0.5, the latest works on XP.
The last version of Palemoon that works on XP is 24.7.2. I have this archived because I was helping someone with XP use something lightweight and almost up to date.

If it is compatible I have a 512 mb stick of DDR 400 CL3 Ram looking for a new home. You're welcome to it if you want it. Can post it to you.

Thank you for the kind offer.

I have no idea if it will take that. I could endeavour to find out.

Mind you what it'd cost to post to UK probably isn't worth it.

ok, let me know. In case I didn't make it clear, I'm not asking you to pay for it and I will pay the postage. My contribution to your project.

I understood that you weren't asking me to pay for it. I just didn't know if you realised I was in the UK. I don't know what Australia Post charge but the UK Post Office charges a lot to post things to Australia.

I have nothing to add to this thread, as it seems y'all have everything worked out. But I can't help but smile at the generosity, class & consideration shown by Mark & Beez.

In a world where it seems like too many folks are looking for...nay EXPECT...something for nothing, it sure is refreshing to see this exchange. You two are awesome! I hope your project works out for you Mark! GOOD LUCK!

    Thanks Hedon James!

I, too, hope this project works out. I'm quite looking forward to doing it. My IT skills are becoming rusty and out-of-date.

Unfortunately, I believe my friend is reluctant. The shame is another PC with some useful life will take up more limited space somewhere as rubbish. If my firend was an online gamer the PC would be useless. However, for someone who goes on Facebook and creates the occasional Word document it is eminently suitable and FREE and I'd be doing all the work. I just don't understand.

I would like to thank everybody who has replied to this thread for their time, knowledge, experience and kind offers.

Yesterday, I discovered that my friend has given the PC in question to someone else. Therefore, I require no further assistance on this issue and I have no project.

@beezneez, thank you for both offering the RAM and to post it to me. I have no use for it now. Hopefully, you can find someone who needs it.
