In the past I have used msconfig to stop certain programs from loading on startup. I was unaware that this could cause problems with the system. After a recent malware issue, I referred to the malware removal guide and returned msconfig to normal like it said to. When I restarted, I ended up in safemode and I don't know how to get out. Help please!

Run MSconfig and make sure you select Normal Startup mode on the General tab. Then also look at the BOOT.INI tab and make sure that the /SAFEBOOT option box is NOT checked. Then click Apply, OK and reboot.

Hmm I seem to have hit another wall. For some reason when i click normal setup, it automatically toggles safeboot. When I uncheck safeboot, it automatically goes back to selective startup. I can't make it both normal startup and not in safeboot. How can I fix this?:confused

If you just uncheck the SAFEBOOT option and ignore the Selective Startup (ie., do not put it in normal startup mode), what happens when you reboot.

It starts as usual (not in safe mode) and i get a pop up message saying I have used the system configuration utility to alter the way the computer starts, and that it is in selective startup mode. Other than that window, it's normal.

My original problem was that my computer says its connected to the internet, but I can't actually get on the internet (Firefox, IE, AIM all don't work). I did a scan and found a rather large trojan.crypt infection, got rid of it (as far as I know), and still have connection problems. I think the connection issue is an effect of the virus, though not sure, so i decided to try and thoroughly clean out any remaining viruses hoping that would fix it. I went to the malware removal guide you created and one of the early steps was to make sure msconfig was in normal mode so thats why i was returning msconfig to normal mode. Thats when I found that I couldn't get out of selective startup without booting in safe mode.

Just ignore the message about Selective Startup. You can even tell it not to tell you about this anymore. See the window when it comes up again.

If you are having malware issues, you need to continue on with the rest of the READ & RUN ME and attach the requested logs.

I will. Do you think that a malware infection is the cause of my connection issues?

ahh sigh of relief. I fixed the connection problem. It's amazing what a little firewall fiddling can do. Don't think I'll need to go through the whole malware removal process, just the usual periodical scanning.

Thanks for the help, you've helped me out with malware issues in the past. I really appreciate what you do. Rock on!
