If it doesnt work, try just

    chkntfs /d

It doesn't do anything at all when I try the second one.

Here is some info to find.

Right click My Computer, go to manage.

Under Event Viwer, to the left, click on Application to highlight it.

We are looking for items from last night when you attempted a chkdsk and received a missing file error.

Anything that has a source of winlogon, double click it for more information. See if you can locate it.

I am back again with same error.

I see you've made another post. I'll read that one next.

I'm in that area now, did a screen shot:

I have clicked on all the winlogon files and they all have the same message seen here:

    Ok.

Well, I'm done for tonight, lets pick up tommorrow evening unless someone else has suggestions.

Try to see if you can finish a chkdsk /f, scheduling it from a command prompt.

If we can determine what that file error was last time, that would be extremely helpful.

Thanks again for all your help. I will be trying a safe mode boot before I go to bed because I know it could take a few hours. Hopefully it just might kick itself into oblivion and I'll wake up in the morning glitch free?

    Thanks again.

    quite welcome.

This is just a matter of clearing the dirty bit on the drive, which I had thought was registry related.

    maybe not.

I'll have more suggestions for Tuesday evening, if they end up being needed.

About 1/2 an hour ago, I shut all programs down and rebooted. I pressed the F8 key to get to that stage where I could select a safe mode option, which I did. There were actually a few modes to choose, but I selected the plane one, "safe mode". The monitor screen then went black with all those data files again, as if it was loading/searching something, then seemed to stop at the same place it did the other night. I went to bed. About 5 minutes ago, I forgot my reading glasses at my computer and when I went to get them, noticed that the machine was loading my regular windows and I dont know if it went into safe mode or not? But, windows loaded and all my desktop appeared, just like normal. (On my old computer, I definitely knew I was in safe mode because it said it right across my screen. Anyway, this time it did not)

The only program I opened was my defrag. I have placed it on pause while I type this post, but it looks like its working:

I wanted to post this in case you came back to this thread before I did. I still dont know what cured it though because I dont know if it goes from safe mode right into normal mode, but it did this all by itself.

I'm off to bed and will de-pause the defragger.

    Thanks again.

Lets see how it plays out. This is definately normal mode, because you have a full range of colors.

    It finished defragging:

It says it has completed. Am I out of the woods? I clicked to view the report, but there are no fragment files in there:

I will leave it where it is until I hear what next to do. I have to run and pick up a few things for my dad and will check in a bit later.

    Hi Adrynalyne:

I wanted to pop back to let you know that I truly value the time you spent working me through this temporary problem I had. The defrag is working fine once again, and I am back on track. The below is just a small token of my appreciation I made for you with my animation program. I hope it puts a smile on your face as your help did mine.

    With kind regards,

    Thanks again.
