I'm in a situation where IE6 (on XP Pro SP2) will only run in safe mode. In normal mode, when I click IE, it briefly gives me an hour glass then nothing happens. (It does show up in the process list, though).

    My history so far.
    ---
I got some kind of Trojan while web browsing last night. I'm pretty sure it came via a google cache link and the offending site appears to still be up. If anybody who knows what they are doing can find out which trojan it is, please let me know. The URL is
http : //l1.soso32.org/zgate <-- add .php to the end.
Do NOT go to this URL unless you know what you are doing. I think I just infected another computer as well. AARGH.

Anyway, Symantec immediately detected it as a generic trojan and quarantined some randomly generated DLL from system32 as well as some files in the Internet temp file directory.

After that it seemed okay until my next reboot after which IE stopped working. I ran Spybot which came up clean and did a full virus scan with Symantec Antivirus (also clean). I installed IE7, hoping IE would repair itself. It started up but it froze so I uninstalled.

I installed Firefox and could then use the Internet. I ran Stinger which reenabled my Windows firewall. It was then that the firewall reported on a suspicious program called ggf.exe. Every time I searched on that term in Firefox, I could not bring up any related pages. After I killed the running ggf.exe, Mozilla stopped working and I could see that ggf had been acting as an Internet proxy. I found ggf.exe in the system32 directory along with files (msdrv1.exe msdrv2.exe s10506.exe d3acdb.dll) with the same timestamp. I removed them and found the following registry entries:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\List
    Name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ggf.exe
    Value: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ggf.exe:*:Enabled:GoogleToolbar
    Name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\msdrv1.exe
    Value: C:\WINDOWS\system32\msdrv1.exe:*:Enabled:050A0B0D197B60B8

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    Name: gf1.0.0.2
    Value: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

Then I found this site & thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1005574
    and here I am...

I figured I needed to repair IE6 but the fact that it runs fine in safe mode leads me to believe there may be an easy(?) way to get it back.

If needed, I will follow the detailed instructions making sure my computer is clean however in the meantime does anybody know how I can get IE working again outside of safe mode?

    Thank you.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please give the below a run!

    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log ( C:\combofix.txt ) for you. Attach this log to your next reply. See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Somehow the problem with IE seems to be fixed. As I was using IE in safe mode, I decided to look at the IE options and I checked/unchecked all the items that appeared to be safer (such as unallow active content on my My computer etc.) Then when I next ran Windows in normal mode, IE seems fine again. This happened before I ran combofix or anything else. So I'm really not sure what solved it.

Anyway I'm attaching the results of combofix. I appreciate your help.

You may have only masked some problems and not removed them. It appears that you may have some password stealing trojans installed. Do you use this PC for anything financial related or have any special security concerns for places you login to?

I strongly suggest that you to the below so we can check out your complete malware status.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
