I received a Surface tablet for xmas and am having a problem with (ironically enough) my gmail account that I use for reported posts here at Major Geeks. rolleyes

    So here is the issue:

None of the links on my Surface that come from MGs in my gmail account are clickable. They come as plain text that I have to copy and paste in my browser. I don't have any issues if I access the emails directly through gmail or if I access them through Outlook on my computer.

I understand that a Surface is not a true computer, but it acts as one. I can access the registry and it has a windows desktop as well.

Can anyone come up with a reason why my links would not work in this one account? (they are all MG links, btw)

I use my personal gmail and it's fine.

Also, I started this over on the MS site: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...kable-on/7e9c2808-83f2-4009-a6ec-6f309e31144d One of the suggestions was forwarding it to another account and accessing the email that way. As soon as I forward it to my outlook.com account, the links work.

I did find this link, but am reluctant to just go and delete stuff from my registry when I don't know what it's doing: http://www.eightforums.com/browsers-mail/11072-hyperlinks-stopped-working-windows-8-mail-app.html

Can someone look at that and tell me if it makes sense?

Sorry for the long post, but this is driving me nuts. Yes, I can come up with solutions that skirt around this issue, like forwarding the emails to another email client, but I'd rather fix the problem if I can.

    LauraR,

Congrats on the new Christmas present. Sorry to hear about your problems with email.

The problem that you describe is caused by like of support for certain email protocols in the Win8 email app. The new email app is designed to encourage syncing with other devices, and is designed as such in Win8.

This is an explanation of what the CLSID key does that the poster in the Win8 forums mentioned deleting, http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms724475(v=vs.85).aspx. This key forces the user to use the default settings defined by the OS.

I can't see any harm in doing what he suggested, as long as you back up your registry first.

    Hope this helps! :)

Thanks for confirming that. I have to figure out how to back up the registry on the Surface (I've just started working with this thing. lol)

The odd thing is that it's not all links within gmail emails...just my MGs ones that I've experienced it in.

    LauraR,

I did try and see what email protocol that MG was using, but didn't get that far! But, your problem does seem to be email protocols. This is a link on how to back up the registry in Win8! http://kb.iu.edu/data/akts.html. Hope this helps you. :)
