Going through "READ ME FIRST" instructions

Trying to clean up, win98, and going through the tutorial but I can't boot into safe mode I've enabled the startup menu but my key board will not respond to make the number 3 selection and I've tried a nonbootable floppy, ejected it and tapped f8, to no avail. I've got "betterinternet" and "gator" and "farmmext" is probably still on here. Any suggestions? I don't think the process works if I don't get into safe mode, I tried the "read me first" a couple weeks ago and no luck.

Have you tried the msconfig method of booting to safe mode (and also getting out of booting in safe mode)? See the method in the below link for your OS:

If you cannot boot into safe mode no matter what you try, run all steps in normal boot mode but for all steps except the online scanners, physically disconnect yourself from the internet while scanning.
