We are an Apple family in many ways. Around MG there is derision and prejudice against Apple at times. I thought this article shows something I could never quite phrase.

Apple has appeal in the ease of use category. If you knew a Mac well 10 years ago you can sit down with the newest one and feel at home. Moving from XP to 8 is not so comfortable. "Better" is a difficult term to define for a large group of people.

hmmm...how to comment on this thread.

In my family (outside my immediate family...namely my kids... who know better), I am considered anti Apple. I have a feeling that what you are saying about people on here having derision for Apple is an equally flawed statement as my family saying I am 'anti-Apple'.

What people who use Apple don't seem to get or understand is that people who choose not to use Apple products are not anti-Apple or have derision for the brand...they actually have a reason for not doing so...just as those who do buy Apple have their reasons. All are personal and equally relevant.

Now, Major Geeks is not the norm. We are a tech forum...a Windows one. Trying to tell people on MGs that Apple is what they should buy is just silly. That would be like going on iLounge (or whatever its called) and telling people they should buy the latest ASUS loaded laptop.

As far as that article.... what I took away from it is that the author admitted that "Samsung's flagship phone wiped the floor with Apple's" but he went for the iPhone anyway 'because his whole family has Apple'. Whether that is true or not as far as the two phones, I have no idea since I don't have a Samsung or an Android phone. What is does do is it speaks to the Apple mentality on their tech buying decisions. That is what I believe people who don't use Apple products see. They don't see someone doing their research and going for the best product they can find...they see the person blindly going for the specific brand.

Honestly, my viewpoint is that people are spending their own hard earned money on tech. They should get the tech they want for the reason they want. No one should tell them they are stupid for doing it because the only person it effects is the person who is buying it and using it. I don't want to have people tell me I'm stupid for buying the Windows phone. Frankly, I'm smarter about tech than probably 99% of the people I know in real life and I have made an extremely informed decision for my purposes, so when people tell me I should get an iPhone, my only response I'd like to make to them is *&^% you...but I'm too polite for that. (and just to clarify one point, I had an iPhone for 3 years and switched to a Windows phone)

My daughter bought an Apple, but I would be lost with it. She loves it. Go figure.

My biggest gripe with Apple is how proprietary their product is. You can't just walk into most stores and buy the accessories you would like. Having to make sure which generation of MagSafe a customer needs is just the tip of the iceberg.

People ask me about normal accessories like headphones, and query if they will work with an Apple. When they used a "unified graphics port" on their MacBooks many a customer left my presence disappointed. They still often do, because Apple doesn't use a regular HDMI port on a MacBook, they use a mini-HDMI. No BIOS access, no customization, you have to use RAM specifically for the brand, and CPUs are soldered to the motherboard along with other important hardware. As far as a left click, it's not always possible with every model and deleting stuff is just an annoying process dragging stuff across the desktop to the trash. You can't just highlight and press delete, it has to be Command-Delete. Windows really is simpler to use in so many ways. As far as W8, there are plenty of shells out there to make it function like W7.

If you have a spill of any sort on the equipment if you own an Apple, good :*** luck pulling the battery before the thing fries.

All in all they are just a proprietary PIA to deal with, they're way overpriced, and I could never stomach owning one. However, I am what one would call a "power user"...

This. I love my iPhone, but have no need for a tablet, and prefer to build my own PC's, so I choose something besides Apple.

I do not care for Apple's politics, but that would be for another forum. ;)

    Meh.

I use OS X and Windows 8.1 at home. I use 8.1 and OS X at work.

There are quips for both, but one thing I can say is going from XP to 8.1 is only painful if you are not good with technology.

It took me 5 minutes to become comfortable with 8/ 8.1.

I find OS X less friendly for usage. More fun to use, and infinitely prettier, but not easier.

Guess I am not good with tech then. ;)

I agree with your comment DOA on that Apple products are easy to use and if anyone used to ask me what smartphone to get, I would always say iPhone as its simple and many apps, over Android or Windows, the gap is closing though.

One of my issues with Apple is not the products as they are style and function but the practice of releasing at least 2 updates to hardware a year, this has many sucked in via great marketing, again cannot fault them in this at all, its just many are blinded to that fact they are spending a fortune for something that's not majorly different to what they had before.

I agree with the mekanic on proprietary connections, once lightening came out is screwed a lot of 2rd party hardware.

But they have great products, just slightly over priced for me to personally justify.

Their OS is good. Their hardware is overpriced for what it is to me. For those who prefer form over function, it may justify the price. I extend that comment to every Apple device.

I think what a lot of people see as derision of Apple, particularly from very tech-smart Windows users, is actually derision of Apple users. Not all of them, of course, but of a specific kind... and I think we all know the people I'm talking about.

Like many others here on MGs, I know more about tech in general, and computers in particular, than practically everyone I know offline. Yet these people still try to convince me that I should by an iPad, instead of any other brand of tablet, and their main reason I should? Because it's an iPad.

That is the extent of their argument, and they act as if they genuinely believe that will convince a PC gaming android user to convert to Apple. rolleyes

Derision is right. That level of Blind Stupid deserves nothing else.

iOS is retarded. How dumb can a smartphone OS get?

Unfortunately this has gone from at attempt at social education to another bash fest.
Perhaps this thread was a bad idea and should be closed.

Not a bad idea. Just unnecessary, since most of the regulars on MGs are already well aware of why Apple products are a very good fit for a lot of the people who purchase them. Several regulars use Apple products, aas you noticed, and seem to like them.

So from that point of view, trying to educate us on what we already know, could be seen as rather condescending... and why wouldn't we mock and bash that kind of presumption? ;)

(Note that when I said "we" I'm talking only about myself. I'm not presumptuous enough to try and speak for anyone else without actually being asked to do so.)

Kinda like your Windows threads. I've always found it interesting that people think Microsoft bashing is fine but balk when its Apple.

We don't need social education friend and per your request, this is now locked.
