I awakened this morning after a long night of drinking to find my bed covered in beer... and luckily i was laying right next to my E1705. the thing had beer coming out of the holes when i picked it up, and it was laying upside down when i woke up. Now needless to say, it doesnt work. I have taken it apart and blown it with a hair drier. when i put it back together one light would come on for like 2 seconds, i think the charge indicator light, but no booting. How long should i give it to start working before chalking this up in the loss column?

I'd say it's dead :( Take it apart again and let it air dry for at least 24 hours and angle it so that it can drain if there's any left over brew. Move it around every so often so that you rotate the lowest part; meaning- get it to drain at different angles.... after 24 or 36 hours, put it back together and PRAY ;)

i wish i could figure out which parts are bad and what works, because the vid card alone is prolly worth a lot, its a go 7900 gs. it wouldn't be too bad if the only things broken are the fans and motherboard.

Laptop motherboards usually have the video card built-in, meaning that it may be a 7900 but it's not removable (usually). The only things that are really removable are the hard drive, RAM, CPU (usually), and the CD/DVD drive (again, usually). And laptop motherboards are not cheap: even used ones are at least $250+

well i'm looking at their web site and finding most things are removable

still i guess i'll wait a lil while longer and see if it comes back up. if not, i gotta figure out what's broke and what isn't. i'm not really worried bout the cpu cuz i kinda wanna upgrade that anyway. the hard drive was covered but comes in a steel case so it should be fine. the dvd drive was completely dry so i figure it should work. i just need to figure out how to test ram and hard drive. i'm hopin the video card is fine and i think it should be because the motherboard probably got knocked out first and cut off power to the card. now to find a new motherboard.

You can test the drive using a USB external drive connector. Or you can buy an adapter that will let you hook it up to a regular IDE cable (assuming the laptop is not SATA).

Just for future reference, if a computer comes in contact with liquids, remove power (AC and/or battery), take it apart as much as you can, and let it dry for a long time like hopperdave suggested.

Sorry if it is dead. But that is a funny story! I like how you admit to doing something stupid and do not try to blame anyone else. Good luck, maybe it will boot up once it sleeps off the hangover...

Not long ago I had to fix a new Toshiba Quosmio that the owners kids had poured a can of coke into.
After drying out the only thing problem was the sticky getting into between the keys and their the pads, requiring a replacement keyboard.

However drying out takes a long time, maybe several days. Don't be tempted to hurry it or try the power too soon.

What a waste of good beer.

ok... the fans aren't spinning. also a burning smell coming out the DC jack. i guess i'm just going to test the ram in my brothers laptop, then order a new motherboard to test the video card and cpu, not sure if hard drive works, but if not a replacement shouldn't be hard to find. i found replacement motherboards on ebay. just gonna wait til i get some cash saved up to buy a replacement.
