I dont know if anyone out there has been keeping an eye on the Console world , but both nintendo and Sony are bringing out a console to match the new gen system of Xbox 360.
    Anyway , I beleive that Nintendo has made a move that may checkmate the opposition . What Nintendo have done is simply change the name from 'revolution' , to 'Wii' . At first glance , this may seem a not so smart move , but , with all the controversy that followed , with gamers on forums saying things such as ;

And mocking the name , obviosly , more people have heard about it. Anywho , I was thinking , this would obviosly generate extra publicity , and have an impact on the hits to nintendo's site. I decided to check this out.

Here is a graph I found on the hits..

    Hits

And , as you can see , I was right.

Anyway , all this post is for , is to applaud nintendo on there clever , ( and possibly couragous ) move.

( Edit ; can someone please delete the above post , that was accidental )

I really like the name Wii now, and agree that all publicity is good publicity, even though I questioned the name when I first heard it. And from what people at E3 are saying, Sony might just have killed the Playstation 3 by sticking a $600 price tag on it; you will probably be able to buy BOTH a XBOX 360 and a Wii for the same price. I know what I'm going to do...:)

Yeah but you don't get a Blu-Ray DVD player by purchasing the Nintendo Wii or the Xbox 360.... For some people, particularly Home AV enthusiasts, that's a major selling point... For others, it's a hindrance

yea, the cheapest standalone blu-ray player cost 1k so even if you arent going to play games its a real bargain. Ive been with Sony since the beginning so Im definitely gettin one :) Im just waiting to see if Killzone 2 lives up to last year's E3 movie....MGS4 too, YEA!

The price tag is definetly a gobbstopper, also this has happened before. In the 80's when BetaMax and VHS were the top contenders. Beta costed waaay more than the VHS and the result was a gigantic fu$kup by Sony.

Nintendo's console looks fun(from what Ive seen on G4), but their games seriously keep me from buying any Nintendo product since the SNES. That is the major selling point with Xbox and PS3. You can change your controller all you want, but if your still stuck with Mario and Wario.......who cares about remotes:rolleyes:

While the Wii will be alot cheaper (launching at $250-$299), its a poor man's PS3, or 360 for that matter.

Sony and Microsoft are even marketing their consoles 'the perfect compliment to the Wii' becuase people probably won't just buy the Wii alone, becuase of how it lacks in features, but becuase of the pricetag, most people will have one. Someone is less likely to buy both a PS3 and an Xbox, however, becuase 1) how expensive they are (especially the PS3) and 2) they have similar features and now even similar game lineups (still exceptions to this though).

But Wii cannot replace a PS3... it barely has any more processing power than the gamecube had. It has zero High def capabilities, cannot store media (movies, pictures, songs etc) does not play DVD's (blu ray or HD), or even CD's, its basically a gamecube with a fancy controller. Thats why its so cheap, you dont really get much.

Dont you think those hit graphs might be influenced by the fact people might be interested in the new console and in anticipation of E3

"lol you said wii" I think people are just gonna start thinking of reasons to call it piss poor :D

i think nintendo is gonna make waves with wii. after all the PS3 failed to amaze ppl at E3 and nintendo got the biggest reception. in fact they had queues that went on for hours cos ppl wanted to try wii. PS3 on the other hand got nothing. fact is, by the end of the day the PS3 booths were empty.

A good friend of mine works for 1up.com as their news editor and he says everyting with the Wii is fun, but the problem is that the graphics are already dated and that the console feels like nothing more than a GameCube peripheral.

I'm excited to get it (I usually buy all the consoles), but I cant help but think that I'd rather play the new zelda game with a traditional controller and play games with the Wii controller only when it makes sense.

I heard that the Wii hardware isnt ready yet (i dont even think any dev kits have been released) and everything running at E3 was on a GameCube. I was thinking the same thing, Metroid looked really familiar lol with the same exact graphics

I'm pretty sure it was Wii hardware in a camecube case, instead of a pc case or whatever the dev kits are put in normally for these shows. The Nintendo rep said those graphics will be pretty much what we can expect from Wii. Last year Microsoft was running 360 games on a power mac...

i'm so down to play teh Wii. Its sounds like the 360 is going to have the best next gen games for at least a year or so (good for me) and the ps3 price is turning me off...so I can afford to get a Wii :)

    Erm , thanks.

But anywho, I've been keeping a keen eye on this thread , and keeping the other , again - on the consoling world. Anyway. Sony and Microsoft lie.

    PS3

    Xbox.

In light of this , with both of these employee's of microsoft and sony lying outright , I dont want to pass infinate judgement on the console's untill they are on the shelves.

But - regarding the consoles current status - price and game range , Wii is the way to go.

    "Wii will rock you"

One of the many reasons - in my mind - to buy a Wii.

At E3 they did have a modified game cube in a wii box running the system. the Gc was modified with wii gear. anyway, The wii will be the ticket for a lot of people out there. Nintendo has always aimed at kids and here again their aim will be kids. They claim the wii is designed NOT to compete against the likes of MS and Sony next gen consoles but to be instead a throw back to quality gaming where graphics will not be the main stay or focus. Game play over graphics.

That said I can honestly say I want nothing at all to do with the wii. I can't even fathom sitting in my living room waving my damn arm around using this controller for the "immersed experience" the wii offers. When I do game I like nothing more than to sit back, relax and knock out a game. Not wave my arms around. If I want that type of interaction I will go skiing, hiking, play basket ball with some friend or go for a ride on my motorcycle.

THAT said the PS3 is going to be quite expensive. The xbox360 is priced right and they did anounce that they would reduce the price even further when the PS3 releases. The PS3 also is a pain for the devs to work with and many have gone on record as saying such. Many have also stated on record that the 360 though harder in its own right is much easier than the PS3.

The argument that "bluray" is on the PS3 is really no argument at all. Untill a standard is officially adopted (HD-DVD Vs Bluray) no one can say which will become main stream. Bluray players and discs cost much more to produce than HD-DVD players and discs. Both offer the very same visual quality and both offer enough space to handle all requirements.

HD-DVD players run for under $500 and HD-DVD movies run $29.
Bluray players will be much much more expensive at $1000 to $1500 and the movies will be running around $50.

Games on the PS3 will not all be bluray. the cost is so great that games would be priced between $80 to $100 and because of this most game companies have stated that non bluray games will be release on the PS3 most likely to save cost.

Anyone that thinks the PS3 will be a cheap bluray player surely does not realise that the bluray player to be used in the PS3 will be a stripped down low end unit that will NOT meet the same quality as a full stand alone bluray player. as generations of bluray players release getting better and better people with A PS3 will actually be losing out.
A good example of this would be the PS2. It too released with a DVD rom. EVERYONE touted the PS2 as a cheaper alternative to a stand alone DVD player. well the DVD roms used were of course of lesser quality and if compared side by side to DVD players released shortly after you can clearly see a difference in visual quality. You can buy a $40 DVD player at walmart that just beats the PS2 DVD playback down hard. In the end the bluray player in the PS3 will be only "ok" compared to the stand alone players released.

IMO HD-DVD is the way to go. Same visual and sound quality, cost effective and more than enough space for whats needed.

you forgot to mention though, bluray cuts piracy in half, not many people are happy about that in a gamers world, but big movie industries and others will surley support it, I also think the visual appeal alone could attract alot of customers.

  29. lubetek

    lubetek Private First Class

Well you are correct about bluray cutting down on piracy. BUT do you honestly believe for one second that hackers won't hack through bluray? If a technologie can be made a hacker can hack it. It's just a matter of time.

On another note though I can understand why the corporate world would like bluray but there are a ton of other corporations that are backing HD-DVD.

as a consumer I could care less about the protection used on discs. I myself do not copy movies and such. I know it goes on and I hate to see prices go up do to piracy, but it's something out of my control.

HD-DVD IMO is the way to go if we as consumers are to get a quality product at a fair rate. I'll say this much. If bluray is adopted as the main stream and movies cost $50+ each. I for one will not be buying them. I can't think of any movie worth that kind of money to me.
