google dll bad image

Greetings Geeks,

A dell laptop, Xp sp3, avast, has a dialogue box warning "google~1... bad image...dll", prior to every system action. There are two google updater services which have been set on manual. Installed progs doesn't show any excess toolbars. Does anyone have any ideas? I don't see any similar issues posted at mg's. Thanks everyone.

 

Can you try a system-wide Find on 'google*.dll' to possibly identify what the damaged dll is?

 

I did a search on my XP system, and the only file that has a 8.3 name of GOOGLE~1.DLL is a Google Toolbar file GoogleCld_69A221B9205A3D78.dll in C:\Program Files\Google\Google Toolbar\Component

If you have the Google Toolbar installed, uninstall, then reinstall it.

 

Thank you pwillener. I've been on the road for the last few days. The problem lies with a friend's laptop and I will have to get together with him. But while I have your ear, as it were (I'll give it right back!), I wonder do you think simply erasing the dll file will end the notification? I am sure there are no toolbars on his machine. That's what I'd try, I guess, although I'd appreciate a heads up if there are perhaps loose associations or whatnot at play. Thank you for your ideas, and wonderful to be helped by someone from Japan. And you probably are reading this tomorrow right now. Or does it go the other way? Anyway, Thanks.
