I've seen quite a few people with this issue, but haven't found a solution that works on my PC yet.

To get started, here's a log from HJThis

I'm also attaching a combofix log if that's of any help.

I really have no clue where this might have come from, but this is a shared PC on occasion, so may have come from a co-worker doing something they shouldn't have been.

    Thanks.

Ooops, sorry, didn't see the diagnostic post above. I'll re-post or edit after I run those steps. My apologies.

Nevermind looks like Super Antispyware killed it.

Okay, I'm back, and so is the hijack.

Google searches fine, shows what appear to be valid results, then the first one you click takes you to an unrelated "search" site of some sort.

If you hit back and click the link again, it goes to the correct site as shown in the Google search.

Attached are the logs set out in the "Read This First" thread, and all scans have been run as listed there.

Thanks for any help you guys can give, and I apologize for the confusion.

I need a new Combo log.

You also have a lot of open ports.....I don't know if you intended that or not, but I would suggest you install a firewall!!

What browser are you having issues with? Have you emptied your temp cache? Have you removed your add-ons and toolbars? Have you had this problem if you actually type in the address?

You also did not disable TeaTimer as requested in the Read and Run First instructions.

I will post the new combofix on Monday. I don't have a software firewall because I'm behind a Cisco firewall at work (where the computer in question is located.

I'll disable Tea Timer and post a new log on Monday.

Browser is Firefox, and no toolbars are installed. The only add on is a tabbed browsing manager that moves tabs to the bottom of the screen.

    Thanks!

I am not seeing any malware in your logs.....again, let me ask if this occurs in FireFox when you type in the url.

Please use add/remove programs to ininstall:
    URL Assistant

Then see if the problem still exists.

No, it does not happen that way. Sorry I didn't include that before..

If I type in the address, it goes there no problem. Only when clicking on search results.

    Odd.

    Did you uninstall URL Assistant?

Yes, I uninstalled it, but it still appears on the add/remove list. I guess I need to do some registry editing to remove it from there.

I may have found a solution, I don't want to say that as a definite yet.

However, I found a reference on another forum to resolving this issue by deleting the overlay.xul file from the Firefox directory.

This had worked for some other people, and it appears to have worked for me, although I won't state that as 100% until I have a day or two with no problems.

If it does wind up working, I'd recommend adding it to your list of things to try in the future :).

Thanks, and I'll post an update after I've had time to test this.

We include the FF extensions in the MGLogs...I just missed seeing it:

    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0012-ABCDEFFEDCBA}\chrome\content\ffjcext\ffjcext.xul

    I apologize for that. :(

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks Tim, it looks like I'm all set.

No problem as far as missing that entry the first time goes. All's well that ends well.

    Much appreciated!
